October is such a fun month, isn’t it? The weather is perfect (not too hot, not too cold) and there is a lot of festivity in the air. For Hong Kongers, not only is there the Mid-Autumn Festival at the beginning of the month, but also a horde of events throughout the month. Whether you are a music lover, a food aficionado or a sports freak, there’s something for everyone this October. 

 

 

ABBA Tribute Show

Tribute group ABBA MANIA returns to Hong Kong, which means it’s time to break out the flared trousers and have the time of your life. Recreating the final 1979 concert of its sensational Swedish namesake, Abba Mania will take audiences on a vibrant journey through song and dance.

Marco Polo Bierfest

For its 25th consecutive year, Marco Polo Hong Kong brings gourmands the most authentic German beer and cuisine. With a view overlooking Victoria Harbour, guests can expect a range of traditional German weissbier and dunkel.
Expect things to take a turn for the sillier as the festival features performances from the Notenhobler Band – the official Marco Polo Bierfest band since 1994. Rumour has it that one of the staples in their musical repertoire is the Chicken Dance.

The Roots of Flamenco

The living tradition of Flamenco arrives in Hong Kong with a world tour featuring two of the art form’s biggest proponents, Sonia Olla and Ismael Fernández.
Flamenco’s “Golden Couple”, whose performances New York Times critic Brian Seibert called “a furnace of earthy sensuality”, will stage a two-day show with accompaniment from world-renowned pianist Chano Dominguez.

The Naked Magicians

Aussie comedy veterans The Naked Magicians return to Hong Kong this month with their critically acclaimed live show featuring full-frontal illusions and hilarious innuendo. The dashing duo performs an array of classic magic routines while stripping down to nothing but top hats and capes. Decidedly R-rated, the show guarantees plenty of laughs on your next group date.

Verdi’s Aϊda

Celebrations commemorating the 20th anniversary of the HKSAR’s establishment continue this month with the arrival of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aϊda. Notable for its four-act structure and central place in the operatic canon, this production is the result of a new collaboration between the Shanghai Opera House and Opera Hong Kong.
China’s brightest contributors to the operatic arts are represented, with singers He Hui and Hao Jiang Tian among them. Aficionados of Verdi’s works can also expect an exciting accompaniment harnessing the talents of mainland China’s best orchestras, including the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra.

Tennis Open 2017

The atmosphere is thick with anticipation as some of the biggest names in professional women’s tennis prepare to return to Hong Kong for the 2017 WTA Tour. Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams is joined by former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki, in addition to a host of other leading players from the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnamese cuisine king, JK Kitchen, celebrated its fourth anniversary with special guests including Lam Kin-Ming, Anson Chan, Janet Kwok, Jessica Chan and Angel Wong.

Lovers of ballroom and Latin dance twirled their way around the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre at the 2017 Asia International Dance Championships. More than 800 professional and amateur dancers competed for the US$100,000 grand prize.

Montblanc launches Timewalker collection in Hong Kong with Escape Room challenge

 

To celebrate the launch of its TimeWalker collection in Hong Kong, Montblanc is hosting a Race Against Time event in Tsim Sha Tsui later this month.

The TimeWalker collection, which was first introduced earlier this year, includes a number of professional watches inspired by the history of Montblanc’s Minerva manufacture.

Believing there’s a close link between motor racing and the measurement of time, the race Against Time event includes a special Escape Room game which challenges participants to complete a number of tasks within a specified period of time.

The Escape Room challenge will feature rooms designed to resemble the garage, library and vault of legendary car racer Thomas Hunt.

Transforming into secret agents, participants will compete against time to find clues to help them escape the rooms.

The winning team will receive a prize of HK$20,000 in cash coupons.

Guests will also be able to see the full Timewalker collection.

The event will take place on the 26 and 27 of August from 11am to 3pm at the Montblanc 1881 Heritage Boutique.

MOre Music: MO Sound-Bites Concert

The second MO Sound-Bites concert, featuring New York DJ Com Truise, was held at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental. MO Bar collaborated with music promoter Jason Swamy to bring Truise to Hong Kong for the first time. More than 200 people made an appearance, including Angie Ng, Barrett Leung, Carl Ng, Charles Lam, Geri Steenkamp and more.

Fendi hosts F is For… fashion music party aimed at millennials

After successfully launching its first event in New York earlier this year, Fendi launched its fashion music party F is For…in Hong Kong last month.

Held at the basement level of Cosco Tower, the star-studded party included a set-up inspired by the Eternal City of Rome. The party merged reality with digitalism to bring the “New Rome” to Hong Kong.

Palazzo Della Civilita Italiana was one of the architectural elements from Rome represented in a modern way using neon lights.

The event, which targeted millennials, attracted a host of well-known faces including Stephanie Cheng, Elva Ni, Venus Wong, Hanna Chan and K-Pop star Tae Yang, among others.

Young socialites Elly Lam, Claudine Ying, Hillary Fan, Feiping Chang and Antonia Li also attended the party

Guests enjoyed digital activities including an instant social-media sharing booth that put images online with the #fisforfendi and experimental live performances by artists from Korea, Japan and China.

DJs Choice 37, R.Tee, Cawlr, Victor Aime, Arisa Ueno and rappers Okasian and Bryan Chase performed at the party.

The event was the brainchild of Christina Monfardini, Fendi’s worldwide communications director.

 

JK Kitchen celebrates 4th anniversary with star-studded party

JK Kitchen, a Vietnamese restaurant in Causeway Bay, celebrated its 4th anniversary recently with a star-studded party.

The event was attended by Anson Chan, Mandy Yuen, Ryu Sang Sook and more.

Guests enjoyed delectable Vietnamese food in the heart of Hong Kong.

Sovereign Art Foundation celebrates artists

The Sovereign Art Foundation held a gala dinner and auction in which most of the artworks by the Sovereign Asian Art Prize finalists were sold. The gala dinner also celebrated Chinese artist Li Hongbo, who won the 13th annual Sovereign Asian Art Prize. Along with the title, Hongbo was awarded a trophy and US$30,000 (HK$234,000).

Azimut, Absolute Yachts show off nine of their latest models

Club Marina Cove in Sai Kung served as the venue for Azimut Yachts and Absolute Yachts to show off nine of their latest models for first-time boaters and yacht owners to enjoy. Over the course of the weekend, Absolute Yachts launched the new Absolute 58 Fly and Azimut Yachts previewed its Grande 35m, Grande 27m, S7 Sportfly and 60 Flybridge.
