CÉ LA VI teams up with Selvedge Grooming to transform brunch

CÉ LA VI teamed up with Selvedge Grooming during June to offer a different take on their brunch.  In addition to the existing brunch package, CE LA VI introduced two thirst-quenching Selvedge Grooming inspired cocktails and one dessert.

The Barber Gimlet cocktail was served in an old fashioned glass and made with gin, lime, kaffir lime leaf syrup and rhubarb bitters, garnished with lime wedge and a kaffir lime leaf.

Inspired by the Moscow mule recipe, the Moustache Mule contained traditional vodka and ginger beer, as well as honey and grapefruit juice for the perfect combination of sweet and sour. The cocktail was topped off with a slice of pink grapefruit.

The dessert, A Close Shave, consisted of a mini matcha tart, cinnamon pate a choux, mini cinnamon bun, cinnamon crumble, fresh fruits, mango pudding with fresh mangos and mango passion fruit.

We visited CÉ LA VI to sample their cocktails and dessert, and take in a shaving masterclass.

CÉ LA VI’s Sunday brunch is priced at HK$488. It is an additional HK$88 for free-flow non-alcoholic drinks and HK$498 for two hours of free-flow Moët & Chandon Vintage, Veuve Clicquot Rosé (HK$398) or Veuve Clicquot (HK$298), which also includes unlimited selected red and white wines, beer and other cocktails.

K11 Art Foundation presents Cheng Ting Ting’s solo exhibition

K11 Art Foundation (KAF) is currently hosting a solo art exhibition by Hong Kong artist Cheng Ting Ting, titled Enfante. Using paint and oil on canvas, Cheng’s paintings explore the theme of children’s freedom of expression.

Cheng, who is also an art instructor, identifies and celebrates each of her pupil’s unique traits through her paintings. At first glance, the paintings look like a child’s doodles, but they are actually an in-depth commentary on each child’s uniqueness.

For instance, her painting 9 pieces of Jagged Grasses shows grass growing in different directions and it could easily symbolise her pupils, each expressing their individuality in their own way.

Besides the works on display, Cheng will also be painting at the venue.

Exhibition dates: Until 4 August

Opening hours: 10am to 7pm daily

Venue: chi art space, 8/F, New World Tower 2, 18, Queen’s Road Central, Central

Kiehl’s builds ‘Nature’s Playground’ to promote green living

Since 2014, Kiehl’s, the American cosmetics brand, has been organising public charity events to promote green living. Following on from its “Nature and the City” campaign in 2015, Kiehl’s recently set up a wooden playground and invited members of the public to make wooden house number plates in Hong Kong.

Kiehl’s “Nature’s Playground” was set up at the Ocean Terminal Forecourt at Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui and was made out of scrap wood. Visitors to the playground enjoyed Nature’s Jigsaw, Mr. Bones’ Slide, City’s Silhouette, Calendula Swing, Apple Seesaw, Natural Percussion Tunnel and Nature’s Path.

Some of the attractions in the playground will be converted into wooden objects and donated to charitable organisations. Also, for every completed wooden plate, Kiehl’s will donate HK$20 to the End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation (ECSAF), with a view to raising HK$1 million. ECSAF, a non-government charitable organisation, was founded in November 1998 by Siao Fong Fong, an award-winning actress and qualified child psychologist/therapist.

A number of celebrities visited the playground to support Kiehl’s campaign, including Joyce Cheng, Helena Pong, Josephine Chiu and Vinci Wong.

Hong Kong polo team finishes third in Singapore tournament

The Hong Kong polo team travelled to Singapore recently to compete in the SEA Games Challenge Trophy. The tournament was a warm-up for the upcoming SEA Games in Malaysia, which is featuring polo for the first time in 10 years.

The Hong Kong polo team, supported by Option Group, finished third at the SEA Games Challenge Trophy.

“It was a thrilling match that saw our Hong Kong polo team shine at the SEA Games 2017 in Singapore,” says Dave Savage, president of Asia World Polo and of the Hong Kong polo team.

“I am especially proud of our team’s hard fought third place victory competing against the best teams in the Asia region. We had outstanding support from 170 guests from Hong Kong and beyond.”

For those who need a little polo 101: “The Sport of Kings” was born in Central Asia when nomads played a version of it as a sport and as a training game for upcoming battles. The nomads migrated to Persia (Iran) between 600 BC and 100 AD and they took polo with them. Polo then became a national sport in Persia, played by nobility and military officers.

Modern polo started life in India in the early 19th century and spread to England in 1869 and Argentina in 1872. The first official written rules (on which the present international rules are based) were created in the 19th century. Polo today is played between two teams who each have four players on horseback. A game of polo consists of four, six or eight “chukkas” and each chukka is seven minutes long.

The Macallan and Klein combined to create a world that seemed to be standing still in a single moment in time – explored through a moving camera at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Time Captured event immersed guests in a disruptive series of visual and sensational adventures, bearing the theme of time manipulation and distortion.

Upon entering the venue, guests were greeted by models posing as “Agents of Time” who through the magic of light and mirrors looked to be spatially distorted. Next up was the Fountain of Time chamber, where droplets of water fell to the ground and rose up simultaneously and a mist curtain floated in the air.

In the main hall, guests were presented with four bespoke cocktails – all inspired by Klein’s Time Captured concept: Time Distilled, Time Manipulated, Time Enriched and Time Captured.

To coincide with the collaboration, The Macallan has released the Masters of Photography: Steven Klein edition whisky, presented in a black case containing a Klein signed print, horse’s head bottle stop along with a range of whisky making tools.
