Tai Kok Tsui Temple Fair

3 Mar

For the 15th consecutive year, the Tai Kok Tsui Temple Fair returns to Hong Kong with its joyous celebration of Hung Shing, the God of the Sea. With all the action taking place just a few minutes from Mong Kok, attendees can expect to spend the day wholly immersed in traditional Chinese arts and culture. The day begins, of course, with a grand parade, complete with sparkly costumes, acrobatic mayhem and a display of percussion perfection. In the evening, the organisers promise 18 dancing lions and at least one 500-foot-long dragon winding its way through the streets. This, it’s fair to say, is no ordinary itinerary.

Hamlet

79 Mar

Bardolatrians can rejoice as one of Shakespeare’s most admired works makes its long overdue return to Hong Kong. Hamlet, a play cherished as much for its vivid lyricism as for its universal motifs, is undoubtedly the world’s best-loved tragedy, making this latest interpretation – a contemporary  Chinese translation, complete with a star-studded cast at the ever-glorious Grand Theatre – all but unmissable. With renowned director Li Liuyi – fresh from the smash hit success of his singular take on King Lear that was the talk of Beijing last year – at the helm, this promises to be the definitive Hamlet of our times. Performed in Putonghua with Chinese and English surtitles, no one need miss out.

The big draw at the event is Jill Robinson, the founder and CEO of the charity, who will be outlining the organisation’s biggest successes to date, while also demonstrating the scale of the challenges that remain. It’s a mustattend meal for anyone serious about championing animal rights causes throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Doggy bags all but guaranteed.

With 22 drivers and 11 teams, this is by far the biggest race to date, and, as if that weren’t enough, this year also marks the debut of Attack Mode, a facility that allows drivers to reach a top speed of 225kmph – 25kmph faster than any past E-Prix has been able to deliver. Thankfully, not one to overlook the environment, this year’s event is skewed towards all-electric vehicles and will provide a gripping update on all the latest developments in this dynamic field.

15 Mar–30 Jun

If you’re looking for a way to entertain the kids, while not having too shabby a time yourself, pencilling in a trip to Disneyland’s Springtime Carnival may well be in order. Yes, one of Hong Kong’s “most magical places” – at least according to the House of Mouse PR machine – is set to have Mickey and Co celebrate the season with a characterful egg-hunt, a fantasy parade, and, of course, an enchanting Easter carnival. Fortuitously opening just in time for the festivities is the brand new projection show We Love Mickey!, which apparently has cutting-edge visual effects by the bucketload. This year, the event is welcoming a number of first-timers – including The Flying Elk and Old Bailey – as well as seeing the return of several old favourites, most notably Chôm Chôm and Zuma. Veteran or virgin, however, the central appeal remains the same – the chance to see world-class chefs in action during a series of live demonstrations.

Artist Walter Poon’s streetscapes show a different Hong Kong

The bustling streets of Hong Kong with imposing buildings and colourful day-to-day scenes have been captured numerous times by artists and photographers. However, this didn’t deter artist Walter Poon from creating a new series of streetscapes which he layered on top of old local newspapers.

Under the Stroke of Water Poon – Hong Kong・Singapore features familiar subject matters — the Star Ferry, the trams and the Merlion of Singapore — but by using old newspapers with cultural values embedded in them, Poon hopes to make people look at the paintings in a different way.

The exhibition runs until 24 October, and forms part of UOB Art Academy’s art programmes. Some of the proceeds from the sales of the artworks and the collectible catalogue designed by Poon will go to Caring for Children Foundation and Evangel Children’s Home for children.

Date: Until 24 October

Time: 11:00am – 8:00pm daily (except Wednesdays)

Venue: UOB Art Space uniquely @ REGAL, 2/F., Regal Airport Hotel, 9 Cheong Tat Road, Hong Kong International Airport, Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong

Tai Po Waterfront Park to host Nautique Hong Kong Wakefest

Fans of water sports should head to Tai Po Waterfront Park this weekend to catch wakesurfers and wakeboarders from around the Asia-Pacific region competing at the Nautique Hong Kong Wakefest 2017.

The event, which is also sponsored by Asia Yachting, the exclusive dealer for Nautique boats in Hong Kong, starts with a practice day on 6 July, followed by competition days on 7-9 July.

In wakesurfing and wakeboarding the rider uses the waves made by the boat, but that’s where the similarities end. A wakesurfer rides the wave behind the boat without holding onto a tow line, but a wakeboarder holds the tow line at all times to stay behind the boat and pull off tricks.

The Wakefest will use the Super Air Nautique G23, the official tow boat for the WWA Wakeboard World Championships, as the designated practice boat and tow boat.

The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Venue: Tai Po Waterfront Park

Date: 6-9 July

Dunkirk
Based on the true story of the Battle of Dunkirk in France during World War II between the Allies and Nazis, the latest movie by Christopher Nolan is expected to be a huge summer hit. Dunkirk details the pivotal moment in 1940 when retreating allies were surrounded by the advancing German armies and managed to evacuate from the beach using naval and civilian ships. Most of the film’s pre-release hype has centred around the fact that it’s singer Harry Styles’ first foray into the movie world. But with a stellar cast including Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh, there is clearly more to Dunkirk than a former boy band member.

K11 Art Foundation presents Cheng Ting Ting’s solo exhibition

K11 Art Foundation (KAF) is currently hosting a solo art exhibition by Hong Kong artist Cheng Ting Ting, titled Enfante. Using paint and oil on canvas, Cheng’s paintings explore the theme of children’s freedom of expression.

Cheng, who is also an art instructor, identifies and celebrates each of her pupil’s unique traits through her paintings. At first glance, the paintings look like a child’s doodles, but they are actually an in-depth commentary on each child’s uniqueness.

For instance, her painting 9 pieces of Jagged Grasses shows grass growing in different directions and it could easily symbolise her pupils, each expressing their individuality in their own way.

Besides the works on display, Cheng will also be painting at the venue.

Exhibition dates: Until 4 August

Opening hours: 10am to 7pm daily

Venue: chi art space, 8/F, New World Tower 2, 18, Queen’s Road Central, Central

Fitness First: Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo on in July

Fitness is big business in Hong Kong. From groups of runners taking over the pavements to gyms filled to bursting point, it seems that the majority of Hong Kongers partake in some kind of fitness activity.

With this in mind, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has organised the inaugural Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo. The event will showcase sports and leisure products from more than 90 exhibitors from Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan and Korea, along with services from more than 120 brands.

The expo will be split into six zones: Outdoor Adventure, Sports Hub, Health and Fitness, Photography World, Fun and Play and Handicraft Market.

“This all-new expo showcases and sells sports and leisure products, arts and hobby supplies, as well as interest classes,” says HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau.

“Members of the public can try some of the products and take part in experiential activities, such as indoor climbing, emerging sports and handicraft workshops. Exhibitors can collect valuable consumer insights on their products and services, launch new products and build their brands through this platform.”

The expo will feature a climbing wall, a rope-jumping competition, freestyle football performances, virtual reality workshops and more.

Autographed football tops from stars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Cristiano Ronaldo will be on display in the Hall of Fame.

Visitors will get the chance to listen to stories from local elite athletes including swimmer Yvette Kong, 5,000m and half-marathon athlete Gi Ka Man and climbing expert John Tsang, the first Hongkonger to complete the Pacific Crest Trail Wong Wai Po.

The expo isn’t primarily sport-based, however, as it will also have over 40 on-site activities including handicraft and photography workshops, sportswear fashion shows, magic performances, music competitions and artificial intelligence (AI) Go competitions.

On the second day of the expo, budding photographers can attend the Getting Your Shot Right – 2017 National Geographic Photography Forum where National Geographic Operation Director (HK) Ivan Tsoi and National Geographic Magazine Chinese Edition Editor-in-Chief Yungshih Lee will share stories along with the winning photographers of the National Geographic International Photo Contest in 2015 and 2016.
