Healing Hydrogen: A profusion of health benefits may arise from sipping water infused with H2

While the benefits of drinking plenty of water are widely known, especially in terms of keeping the body hydrated, the health advantages of drinking water that has been enriched with hydrogen are only just being recognised. There is mounting scientific evidence to suggest the gas brings all sorts of gains that tap or bottled water cannot provide alone.

Hydrogen is the lightest element in the periodic table and when bonded together forms molecular hydrogen (H2). Being the lightest and smallest of molecules, it can escape out of practically anything. It is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas molecule, imperceptible by human senses. It binds to other elements like oxygen (creating water), nitrogen and carbon to form compounds.

An interesting point is that about 10 percent of the weight of living organisms is hydrogen within water, proteins and fats. On a broader level, much of the vitality of our planet is derived from hydrogen since the energy emanating from the sun is a result of hydrogen being converted into helium.

Therapeutic effects

Studies have indicated that water (H2O, two hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom) containing dissolved hydrogen gas at a concentration of 0.5 to 1.6 mg/L (ppm) can provide therapeutic effects to the human body that plain water cannot deliver – apparently because the body cannot effectively absorb the hydrogen molecules attached to the oxygen molecules within water.

Hydrogen-rich water made by infusing hydrogen gas into pure water is considered suitable as a health and preventative drink for people of all ages. It is believed that it is virtually impossible to overdose on molecular hydrogen and it has no toxic effects on living cells at high levels.

H2 water everywhere

H2 is often packed into cans or pouches, or can be made at home via special hydrogen water machines. H2 water machines and generator bottles are quite common in health clinics in Hong Kong and are a simple and effective way of ingesting molecular hydrogen.

Portable hydrogen bottles are designed to infuse additional hydrogen molecules into drinking water and enrich it instantly, while counter-top hydration machines can produce therapeutic concentrations in greater quantities. H2 tablets can generate high levels of hydrogen in any water-based drink. It is also possible to take hydrogen baths and spray it onto your face.

Antioxidant boost

Molecular hydrogen has been generating such interest as it is thought to be a powerful antioxidant. Most pertinently, it is believed to have the ability to limit free-radical damage in the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules produced in the body and can be exacerbated by environmental factors. They can contribute to oxidative stress – a situation known to cause many health issues. Put simply, this is where free radicals attack healthy cells and cause irreversible damage.

One of the best ways to combat oxidative stress is by upping your antioxidant defence system. The body naturally delivers antioxidant agent chemicals that destroy a multitude of free radicals. There are numerous ways to increase levels, such as a diet rich in antioxidant foods like fruit and veg, and by enjoying a healthy lifestyle – plus harnessing the benefits of hydrogen molecules.

Small is beneficial

According to some medical professionals, H2 has the properties to make it the best antioxidant of them all. The fact that the molecules are extremely small is important because for antioxidants to work effectively they must be able to penetrate cell areas being attacked by free radicals, and these are often difficult to reach. As H2 is in a gaseous state, it percolates through the body via rapid diffusion and is not blocked by mechanisms that ordinarily prevent other antioxidants from moving freely. And since H2 is not only small but exceedingly light, its ability to travel through cell layers is enhanced.

Another great benefit of H2 as an antioxidant is that it is thought to produce zero byproducts, meaning it has zero toxicity and will even convert free radicals to water. Molecular hydrogen also has the ability to select and act upon free radicals that cause the most cell damage – an important attribute given that not all free radicals are thought to be harmful.

Novel therapies

Numerous studies point to the healing qualities of hydrogen-rich water. One eight-week study involving patients receiving radiation therapy for liver cancer showed decreased levels of oxidative stress for those participants who drank 51 to 68 ounces of water infused with hydrogen per day. Another research project conducted by the University of Western Ontario found consumption of hydrogen-rich water improved levels of oxidative-stress markers associated with metabolic syndrome – whose risk factors include obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension and insulin resistance – and boosted the body’s antioxidant activity. Researchers noted that hydrogen water represents a potentially novel therapeutic and preventive strategy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome.

While molecular hydrogen is considered by some health professionals to be one of the best ways of fighting free radicals and limiting oxidative stress, other studies have reported less conclusive results. Further research is needed to assess the potential benefits with a higher level of scientific backing.

Some scientists believe that molecular hydrogen can help in the battle against diseases of the immune system, such as lupus (SLE) and other types of immune-compromising infections. A Japanese study postulated that H2-rich water can combat rheumatoid joint pain by lessening oxidative pressure, and other findings have suggested molecular hydrogen dampens the allergic response when the immune system goes into overdrive. Furthermore, a study on rodents with Alzheimer’s disease indicated H2 can enhance cognitive functions and increase memory.

Beauty bonus

Though research is ongoing, there is evidence that molecular hydrogen can also work wonders as a beauty remedy. A Japanese study, among others, has shown that washing the face with hydrogen- infused water over a three-month period enhances skin elasticity and reduces wrinkles, promoting a youthful appearance. Other research has involved patients being administered hydrogen water directly into their veins via a saline drip, resulting in improvements in skin health.

There is also evidence that hydrogen-rich water quickens athletes’ ability to recuperate from injury and boost their athletic performance.

Line Managers: Our pick of skincare using new technology to target an age-old situation

Of the many remedies marketed for ageing skin, those that target fine lines and texture make the most difference over time. Creams for mature skin, according to experts, differ from other formulations in that they focus exclusively on preventing and treating fine lines and texture – the direct results of the natural ageing process – compared to formulae that tackle all visible indicators of advancing years (think dark spots and dullness).

Along with retinol, peptides, growth factors, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are key components of what specialists call the greatest creams for aged skin. It will take time for products enriched with these ingredients to improve the skin. However, overall, you will see less texture, more radiance and more bounce – as long as you exfoliate and moisturise regularly – making skin look more youthful. Most importantly, it is still crucial to use sunscreen frequently to protect your skin from damaging UV radiation.

Clé de Peau Beauté La Crème

With over 60 carefully chosen ingredients and the Japanese brand’s youth-enhancing Skin-Empowering Illuminator, Clé de Peau Beauté’s La Crème goes above and beyond the average night cream. It works while you sleep to plump, regenerate and reveal luminous, supple skin by sunrise. It was created using more than 100 precise processes to refine its texture and is based on significant research into the behaviour of the complexion as you sleep. It reacts to variations in skin temperature and enhances blood flow throughout the night to improve density.

Dr Sebagh Supreme Neck Lift

Supreme Neck Lift’s amazing recipe contains a wide variety of preventive and skin- boosting moisturisers and active substances that protect, firm and lift the skin. It was created by Jean-Louis Sebagh, the French cosmetic doctor, to help restore firmness and elasticity at the neck and décolleté. With regular application of Supreme Neck Lift in the morning and at night, skin will look and feel tighter overall, and the neck and décolleté will be smoother and cleaner with greater suppleness.

Evidens de Beauté The Day Moisturizer

This luxurious cream imparts instant softness and relaxation to the skin, with its effectiveness the outcome of a balance between internal stimulation and external protection. The Day Moisturizer revitalises skin while minimising both fine and more severe wrinkles. Infused with the French- Japanese brand’s proprietary Qai Complex, Triple Collagen and moisturising and revitalising ingredients, it gives the face more youth, radiance and firmness.

Helena Rubinstein Powercell Night Repair Cream

This night-time boost from Helena Rubinstein’s Powercell line is a rich yet lightweight defence against daily damage. It is formulated with a core of native plant cells, aqua keep and glycerine, a combination that works to restore vitality and the skin’s natural hydrolipidic film. A plump, well-hydrated complexion with fewer symptoms of ageing greets you in the morning.

La Prairie Platinum Rare Cellular Night Elixir

Platinum Rare Cellular Night Elixir is a potent skin-rejuvenating product from the storied Swiss brand that promotes the four processes essential for the skin to fully regenerate – detoxification, nutrition, breathing and immunity boosting. For the first time, a single, remarkable recipe embraces a special combination of rare, active substances to address these four crucial roles.

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Night Cream

This nourishing retinol night cream from one of the first clinical skincare brands significantly enhances firmness and brightness. It also minimises lines and deep wrinkles, evens skin tone and moisturises. Founder Dr. Howard Murad uses Retinol Tri-Active Technology, which has niacinamide and picolinamide to reinforce the skin barrier and smooth texture, in a product that quickly renews your face while being gentle enough for nightly use.

Natura Bissé C+C Vitamin Cream

This outstanding cream, which is made with a remarkable quantity of vitamin C, gives superficially or thoroughly dry skin back its elasticity, tone and firmness. As an added bonus, Barcelona-based Natura Bissé blends three types of vitamin C antioxidants and collagen with revitalising components that serve to strengthen the effect against free radicals.

Paula’s Choice Clinical Retinol + Bakuchiol Treatment

The choice of US personality Paula Begoun, this product from the Clinical treatment line is ideal for intermediate retinol users. Triple-action retinol, plant-derived bakuchiol and peptides support collagen-depleted skin to target fine lines, deep wrinkles, enlarged pores and loss of firmness. A moderate retinol strength of 0.3% and 2% bakuchiol works to achieve multi-level repair and rejuvenation.

Sensai Cellular Performance Extra Intensive Cream

Endowed with high-end oils that meld with the skin to revitalise its appearance and feel, Sensai’s new Extra Intensive Series is billed to help regain lost suppleness, hydration and translucency after just one day. Then, month after month, it encourages the skin to maintain its natural beauty, becoming silkier and more luminous. A high concentration of Hyaluronate/ Collagen Booster – part of the Japanese brand’s Advanced CPX Vital Extract – provides additional hydration for firmness.

Ministering Angel: Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre & Hong Kong Ballet champion Anne Wang Liu does all she can from the heart

“Super Speed!” proclaims Anne Wang Liu when asked which superhuman ability she would choose. A self-proclaimed multitasker, she has mastered the art of operating at speed as she juggles motherhood and her life passions one day at a time.

Despite her glamorous appearance – arriving in a monochromatic light-brown and skin-tone semi-formal ensemble, high block-heeled pumps in the same colour tone, jewellery from her own accessory line and gleaming black locks in relaxed big curls – more than anything she seems a diligent, efficient mum making sure everything is under control. We meet on a highly changeable summer’s day – beautifully clear at first, then gloomy and raining – a weather pattern that locals proudly claim is unique to Hong Kong. Yet for Wang Liu, it’s all about perspectives.

“Ah, the weather! One of the few things in life we people cannot control, right?” she says, as she smiles brightly and poses for the camera despite raindrops splattering her yellow garden dress. “That’s the thing, whatever circumstance we are put into, it’s about making things work and overcoming it.”

Raised on the outskirts of New York City, young Anne completed an economics degree at Cornell University, then embarked on a career in finance. She has contributed her planning abilities to a number of causes since she and her husband, Julian Liu – whom she met at college – moved to Hong Kong two decades ago, including Hong Kong Ballet and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre, which marks its 10th anniversary here.

Caring Spirit

Wang Liu is a familiar face of the city’s social scene and one of the most well-loved Hong Kong socialites. Apart from being blessed with impeccable style, her vibrant personality makes her easy to like. Joining the Board of Governors of Maggie’s nine years ago reflected her selflessness and determination to give back to the community.

“When I first became involved with Maggie’s, I had friends and family who were fighting cancer and I felt that Hong Kong lacked the facilities that were needed to support patients,” she says. “Yes, we have the doctors, but social support is very important in fighting the disease. Maggie’s has a multidisciplinary team, including oncology specialists, social workers, clinical psychologists and registered dietitians to provide free, practical, emotional and psychosocial support to people touched by cancer.”

By peeling off the layers to unveil her rawness, Wang Liu moves beyond the superficiality of being judged by how she might dress for events or appear on the social pages of magazines. She goes deeper by nurturing the inside – a mindset that reveals her beautiful soul.

Fayre of Heart

The first Maggie’s opened in Edinburgh in 1996 as a new type of care centre that would make the experience of cancer more manageable for everyone. It was conceived by the late Maggie Keswick Jencks – who had spent her early years in Hong Kong – following the return of her breast cancer. The Hong Kong centre was built in the grounds of Tuen Mun Hospital in 2013 with the support of the Keswick Foundation.

As she explains, it does not have government funding and depends solely on grants and donations to continue its work: “We have an upcoming event in December, the Fayre of St John’s, with all proceeds from individuals and businesses going to cancer patients and their families. I am involved very much as the fundraising committee co-chair to raise public awareness and funds for the event.

“Ultimately, the aim is to ensure that Maggie’s has the resources it needs to provide high-quality care and support to people affected by cancer. The fundraiser brings families together for a night of song and gives a face to those suffering from cancer,” she adds.

Strength All-Around

As we shoot the third look, the production team is fanning an ethereal goddess-like green gown with long trails on the shoulder to give an angelic wing effect for the photos. Humming the chorus of Bette Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings in between makeup touch-ups, our equally angelic model reiterates the fact that a strong support system plays a crucial part in life.

“My parents taught me the need for a parent to always support their children’s emotional well-being and to create an environment where my children feel safe and confident,” she says.

“My parents provided me with the opportunity to engage in many different activities. I led an active childhood, participating in sports, dance, music, student government and community service. They allowed me to pursue my personal and intellectual curiosity. Moreover, they taught me the importance of close familial ties and having a supportive group of friends.”

Acing Motherhood

It’s a philosophy she applied while raising her two daughters, Madeline and Audrey. Despite her busy schedule, she finds time to be the cool mum she wants her kids to have. Just days before the shoot, she scored much-coveted Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert tickets for the three of them.

“It was crazy! Super” she shares excitedly, the way one would with teenage peers. “I made sure we got the chance to watch Taylor Swift because both of my girls are huge fans. And now, I am too.”

When asked how old her daughters are now, she laughs quickly and says: “Next question.” Still chuckling, she proudly continues to tell her story about motherhood and how she managed to raise them just the way she wanted it to be.

“I am focused on teaching them what’s right and wrong, and luckily, they’ve turned out to be quite self-motivated. So, I don’t need to guide them as much anymore. Things are now reversed and they are guiding me,” she says.

Ballet Benefits

Exemplifying her belief in giving back to the community and helping the next generation, as co-chair of the Hong Kong Ballet Guild, she devotes her time to making the artform accessible to youngsters from different backgrounds. The annual Nutcracker Christmas Benefit, a fundraising event she considers to be one of her most significant career accomplishments, holds a special place in her heart as both her daughters have performed numerous roles over the years.

“I have watched them grow up on the stage,” she says. “Self-expression in performing arts is paramount. It allows individuals to convey emotions, stories and perspectives uniquely. This creative outlet fosters personal growth, empathy and cultural understanding, enriching both the artist and the audience. It’s a vital means of connecting and communicating in a diverse world.”

As she journeys through life learning about what she loves and embracing every moment of it, she knows that it’s a continuous process.

“My mother and sister have been a constant source of inspiration and support. Both are professional working moms that have been able to balance careers while raising a family. My children have been a constant inspiration and remind me to stay curious, adventurous and young at heart.”

We finish the shoot and interview, typically a four-hour marathon, in just 90 minutes, and she moves seamlessly into discussions with Maggie’s staff to finalise their upcoming event. While she may not possess the superhuman power of super speed, she truly does a lot and always from the heart. Anne Wang Liu has a million obligations, personal and professional, and she gets an A+ for them all.

Face Moisturisers 101: The Best Face Creams According to Different Skin Concerns

Face moisturisers have always been an essential part of skincare. Even if we were to skip the other steps in the skincare routine on a lazy day, we ensure not to forget the moisturising ritual. For some, it is essentially the only step in their skincare regime following cleansing and exfoliation.

As a matter of fact, face moisturisers have proven to improve the skin’s texture and are necessary to tackle dermatology issues like fine lines, wrinkles, dryness and more. They are said to be a replacement for our dermis layer’s natural moisturiser – oil-producing glands – that function less effectively as we age.

Recommended that we start moisturising from our teen years and start opting for anti-ageing ones in our twenties, Gafencu has found the best face moisturisers depending on the different common skincare concerns.

face moisturisers

Best for Skin Ageing – LA MER The Moisturising Soft Cream

Infused with the extremely effective ingredient called the Miracle Broth – discovered by La Mer’s research team – this moisturising soft cream works wonders in removing fine lines and improving your skin’s elasticity. It is packed with billions of moisture spheres making sure that the cream works its magic on every part of the skin. When the product was clinically tested on about 30 Asian women, there were visible signs of improvement within four weeks of using the moisturiser twice every day.

face moisturisers

Best for Dull Skin – Dr Dennis Gross Oil-Free Radiant Moisturiser

If you are prone to blackheads then the Dr Dennis Gross Oil-Free Radiant Moisturiser is possibly the best face cream for you because it is non-comedogenic – as in it does not clog the skin’s pores. Instead, it improves your dermis layer by hydrating and diminishing sun damage which eventually results in even and glowing skin. This dermatologist-approved product does so with its power-packed ingredients like lactic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide and more.

face moisturisers

Best for Damaged Skin – L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream

The Immortelle flowers have been considered a nature’s gift to the skincare industry for their anti-ageing properties and moisturising benefits so it is not surprising to see that L’Occitane has developed an entire face care line that uses the exotic flower as one of the primary ingredients. One product in this collection is the Immortelle Divine Cream which repairs the dermis layer by visibly removing wrinkles while also making the skin soft and firm by hydrating it.

face moisturisers

Best for Hyperpigmentation – Natura Bisse Luminous Brightening Rejuvenating Moisturiser

Even skin with no blemishes is typically seen as aesthetically appealing and most of our skincare routines are catered in expectation of such an outcome, and Natura Bisse’s rejuvenating moisturiser promises similar results as it helps enhance the skin by fully reducing hyperpigmentation, blemishes and other signs of sun damage and ageing. It also helps with hydration and gives the skin a brighter appearance thanks to the hyaluronic acid and aloe vera in it.

face moisturisers

Best for Dryness – Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream

Given its numerous benefits, hyaluronic acid has become a ubiquitous skincare ingredient found in almost every hydrating moisturiser which also includes the Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream by Laneige. This Laneige product is ingrained with many micro-sized blue hyaluronic acid particles that get deeply into the skin thus helping with hydration and dealing with redness and roughness on the skin. The face cream comes in two renditions – one which is suitable for dry skin and another which is perfect for combination to oily skin.

face moisturisers

Best for Sensitive Skin – Giorgio Armani Crema Nera Supreme Reviving Light Cream

Boasting a very silk texture, this light cream from Giorgio Armani allows for easy application while also deeply penetrating the skin to work the power of its primarily-ingrained ingredients such as the brand’s trademarked Reviscentalis and Mediterranean caper. The Giorgio Armani cream helps to achieve glowing and supple skin, and its light texture makes it the perfect moisturiser if you have sensitive skin.

Algica: The Next Super Ingredient Entering The Skincare Game

Rice water, snail mucin, green tea, and many more ingredients, the skincare industry has borrowed from nature for the benefits they can have on the dermis. Newly entering this lineup of organic materials is algica.

Said to have a chemical structure that cosmetology experts have been trying to mimic, the algica is built in a unique way allowing it to be an iconic addition to the skincare game.

For those interested in the science of it, algica is basically the outlet layer of algae called diatoms which scientists from the Swedish Algae Factory have discovered a technique to produce in an environmentally friendly and circular manner thus leaving no harmful chemicals in our ecosystem.

This super ingredient is environmentally friendly and has an EcoCertification for being safe for the ocean and sea life.

In addition to being a more conscious choice, here are all the reasons why algica for the skin is a godsend for skincare enthusiasts.

algica

Moisturising
One of the purposes of the algica in nature is to ensure enough water in the algae. Much like it, it will keep the dermis layer hydrated when included in moisturisers, serums or toners. It is even proven to be more effective than hyaluronic acid which has long been a game changer for its hydrating property. Besides, its light weight makes it easier to apply and the skin soaks it up much faster than hyaluronic acid.

algica

Cleansing
It absorbs oil, dirt, sweat, and other impurities thus making algica an excellent cleanser.

In fact, it can take in nearly 20 times more impurities than any other chemically-engineered material and shows results three times faster.

Protecting
It is a perfect barrier for the skin as it not only blocks harmful UV rays but also stops air pollution from getting into a person’s skin.

In other words, algica is sure to take the dermatology industry by storm because it is going to make your skincare routine much quicker as this single ingredient guarantees multiple benefits.

Dermatology brands like L:A Bruket, Kari Gran, Lumi, Ecooking and more have already started infusing it into their products. The organic skincare brand L:A Bruket has even taken it a step further and launched a face care collection which has algica as one of the key ingredients.

Rebecca Chung on female empowerment and self-love

From music teacher to beauty maven, High Society Skin Clinic’s Rebecca Chung turns treatment rooms into safe havens

What makes your beauty clinics stand out?

No matter at Princess Brows or High Society Skin Clinic, we show our love and support to our clients. We don’t practise hard sell like many other establishments in Hong Kong. This is also based on my own experience: hard selling is so common place at beauty clinics in the city that quite often clients are pushed to buy treatments they don’t need.

Instead, we encourage clients to open up to us and talk about their problems to relieve themselves of that emotional burden. In each treatment room, we have a mirror where we place inspirational quotes and positive affirmations to inspire and remind our clients of their own beauty. Thus, they can walk out feeling happy and confident in their own skin and body. We realise that our clients are so stressed from their day-to-day life that they tend to forget to take care of themselves. We want to create a safe, stress-free space of relaxation and joy.

Could you share your perspective on today’s beauty trends in Hong Kong?

K-Pop and K-Beauty are rapidly growing in popularity, and we have noticed a demand for more V-shaped faces. At High Society Skin Clinic, we provide HIFU [high-intensity focused ultrasound] skin-tightening treatments to achieve this look.

Clients can see immediate results after one session, and zero downtime which is ideal for Hong Kongers as they are so busy and want to look good after one session! We also provide Emsculpt NEO [non-invasive body shaping] and Emtone [non-invasive cellulite reduction and skin tightening] for a more toned-looking body.

Any advice for a quick confidence boost?

Self-love is really important, especially in trying times such as the last two years of the Covid pandemic. People are stressed – from work and from everyday life. Many people suffer from chronic stress, anxiety and mental illness and may not be aware of it.

I encourage them to talk to their friends, to a professional, or spend some time at High Society Skin Clinic. Freely expressing yourself is cathartic and allows you to restore your confidence.

“I already have all my permanent makeup on, so basically, I don’t have to do makeup every day; I can just wake up and walk out like this”

Tell us more about Glowagen.

Glowagen is an edible wellness brand that I started in 2020 somewhat by chance. I had found manufacturers in Australia and Japan that made supplements that focus on health and wellness, which is something I advocate.

The brand has an array of products from NAD+ supplements [nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide for brain-cell health] to anti-ageing and collagen drinks. We also have supplements for breast health, especially for breastfeeding mothers, and skin whitening.

What’s your daily beauty and self-care regimen?

I already have all my permanent makeup on, so basically, I don’t have to do makeup every day; I can just wake up and walk out like this. On the rare occasions I do apply makeup, it is to attend an interview or event or go to dinner.

My daily skincare consists of a cleanser, serum, face cream and sunblock. I love Swiss products! My current favourites are my own formulations, the Rebecca Sylverster White Truffle Recovery Serum and the Vampire Magic Mask, as well as Cellcore and La Prairie products.

As for my self-care routine is going to High Society Skin Clinic and doing a session of NEO Emsculpt treatment. It burns fat and saves time, as it only lasts 30 minutes. To relax my mind, I like doing stretching and jogging. I also enjoy swimming with the family.

What attracted you to medical tattooing?

The medical tattooing we do at Princess Brows is a means to empower women and help give them their confidence back. We provide a range of services from recreating areolas on women who underwent breast surgery and hair strokes on areas such as the eyebrows for people with alopecia, to covering up skin imperfections such as under-eye dark circles, stretch marks and vitiligo.

When I launched the brand a decade ago, I was doing semi-permanent eyebrow and eyeliner treatments. At the time, beauty practices were still a little old-fashioned. Traditional cosmetic tattooing was done with minimal safety and hygiene standards. It was quite common to see practitioners doing these tattoos with no gloves or sensitisation, and there were practically no professional beauty academies teaching proper ways of executing these treatments.

That did not sit right with me, so I looked for better pathways and decided to go abroad to learned more about microblading, cosmetic and medical tattooing. I discovered that these techniques can go beyond perfecting beauty and become a way to empower and restore confidence.

Then, noticing that most microblades used in cosmetic tattooing in Hong Kong were made in China and undergo minimal sterilisation, I started The House of PMU, a series of high-quality semi-permanent eyebrow, eyeliner and lipliner pigments made in Germany to ensure a high standard of safety and hygiene. We provide precision microblades to carry out safe, sanitary treatments responsibly. The best part is that our pigments come in a range of custom-made colours dedicated to the Asian market.

High Society Skin Clinic opened a new flagship branch this April. What’s next for you?

We have been lucky to be able to expand High Society Skin Clinic within the same building as our previous venue. We now take up an entire floor, affording a larger space and upgrading our technology, equipment and machines to give our clients a more comfortable experience and the best services.

We have been able to franchise G.E.L. Lashes [next-generation eyelash lifting] in more than seven countries worldwide. In the near future, we would like expand to retail and hopefully open more stores in popular shopping malls. We have also expanded our supplement brand, Glowagen, to Watson’s across the city and hope to move to China and beyond soon.

“We place inspirational quotes and positive affirmations [on the mirrors] to inspire and remind our clients of their own beauty”

Tell us about your childhood and how you realised your passion for beauty.

My childhood in Hong Kong was pretty average; I grew up just like any other local girl. I studied at local schools and learned how to play the piano. I started teaching music at the age of 15 and for more than 10 years I enjoyed it, but I also came to the point when I was ready for a change.

Beauty and fashion have always been passions of mine. I remember that I used to love playing with Barbie dolls, doing their makeup and getting them dressed. I started doing semi-permanent makeup treatments as a hobby, but never thought I could make it into a career until I was 30 and decided to pursue it seriously. Shifting my career path, I decided to create something of my own and launched Princess Brows in 2011.

At the time, Hong Kong didn’t have too many semi-permanent makeup practitioners, so I was keen to learn various techniques and styles of cosmetic and medical tattooing. Then, once Princess Brows was up and running, I realised that there are so many other avenues for creativity and innovation in the beauty industry. In 2018, I expanded my business with High Society Skin Clinic, where we offer body contouring and hair-removal treatments with the intention to foster empowerment and confidence in one’s own healthy, happy body.

Who is the person you look up to the most? Any personal heroes?

My husband! He takes care of me, my family and my business. We actually started this business together. Though he has a job of his own, he used his spare time to take care of the finances, and basically did the things I didn’t want to do! I am really lucky to have someone who gives me unconditional support and trust, and is able to take care of the family. He takes my son to school every day and cooks for me, too!

Finally, if you could pass down anything to your children, what would it be?

Definitely not money! The most important thing for me is that my children grow up kind and respectful of other people, no matter their background – that is the most fundamental value I hope to pass on to them.

My children are now four and 14 years old. They don’t know their goals yet, and I, myself, am still trying to figure out how to be the best parent I can be. But I am also blessed to be able to put them in the best schools and trust that the teachers are able to nurture those good values in them as well.

Thank you.
