Corum throws watch appreciation party for the launch of its Golden Bridge ladies’ watch

Swiss watchmaker Corum recently hosted the “Golden Bridge of Love” Watch Appreciation Party to celebrate the launch of its Corum Lady Golden Bridge Round 39mm at Jinjuu in Lan Kwai Fong.

The Golden Bridge Round focuses on a fine balance between shape, materials and functionality, following the design codes of Art Deco Movement. Featuring a round case adorned with diamonds and colourful straps in golden, red, pink, blue and green, the watch is a looker as well as a performer.

To accentuate the colourful aspect of the watch, the venue was decorated in matching colours. A slew of celebrities, socialites and watch connoisseurs showed up to support their favourite brand. Of them, the most notable were renowned actors Jason Chan and Sarah Song, models Ana R and Krissi Cristina, socialites Ava Yu, Amanda Lui, Gigi Ho and Lily Ho.

A large number of the guests attended in golden attires to echo the party’s theme. The “Best Dressed Award” went to Amanda Lui, who was presented a Corum ladies’ watch by Soon Boon Chong, Asia Brand Director of Montre Corum Sarl.

Chiming Watches: Ring in the New Year with these chiming timepieces

Elizabeth-Doerr-recommends-some-Chiming-Watches

Elizabeth Doerr, co-founder of Quill & Pad, presents seven new chiming watches you’ll want to flaunt in 2018.

Chiming watches evolved from a need to know the time at all hours – even when the sun doesn’t shine. Super-LumiNova wasn’t around in the Middle Ages, so, without any way for townsfolk to see the clock tower at night, the hand struck a bell to signify the hour.

The idea was later adapted to portable timekeepers after the balance spring was invented. More often than not, a slide in the case band is used to wind and activate the repeating mechanism. One such kind, a minute repeater, chimes out the hours, quarter-hours and minutes, with the strikes differentiated by hammers and gongs that ring in unique or even double (ding-dong) tones.

Chiming Watches: Ulysses Nardin Hourstriker Pin-Up

In addition to being among the rarest luxury timepieces, wristwatches with striking complications are among the hardest to manufacture. As Ulysse Nardin’s late owner, Rolf Schnyder, once said, “The real challenge is the sound quality. Despite significant advances in technology today, minute repeaters cannot be industrialised, and a minute repeater is as much a musical instrument as it is a timekeeper.”

He would likely be proud of the Swiss brand’s Hourstriker Pin-Up. The hand-painted dial depicts a burlesque dancer who cheekily reveals glimpses of herself when the hammer strikes the gong on the hour and half-hour. The “hourstriker” was known in the 16th-century as the clock-watch, and it struck the hours with a single blow “in passing” (en passant) without having to activate a slide or push a button. Available in a 43mm pink gold or platinum case, the timepiece is limited to just 28 pieces.

Chopard’s L.U.C. Full Strike a great example of chiming minute repeaters

One of the more striking watches to hit the market is Chopard’s L.U.C. Full Strike, which just won the prestigious Aiguille d’Or award from the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The Chopard oeuvre – created to celebrate 20 years of the L.U.C. line – has an impressive claim to fame: its gongs are made of sapphire crystal. Housed in a 42.5mm 18-carat fair-mined pink gold case, the timepiece is also stamped with the prestigious Seal of Geneva.

Knowledgeable watch connoisseurs, meanwhile, have long dreamt of owning Greubel Forsey’s Grande Sonnerie. The watch is coveted for its sonorous cathedral chimes housed within an 855-piece movement which includes a patented 25-degree inclined 24-second tourbillon.

A Chiming Example: Greubel Forsey’s Grande Sonnerie

The Grande Sonnerie boasts a platinum mini rotor for automatically winding the chiming function; serially operating fast-rotating barrels; and a security system for disengaging the strike mechanism if the crown is pulled out during the chime (something that would immediately break any other chiming watch). It is housed in a 43.5mm white gold asymmetrical case that includes a side window to allow a full view of the tourbillon.

For a watch that will get you noticed, Audemars Piguet’s groundbreaking Supersonnerie is the loudest minute repeater on the market right now. Its makers concentrated on improving existing theories and practices, but added one fundamental difference: a soundboard to allow the gong’s sound vibrations to extend beyond the case. This 44mm manually wound titanium timepiece comes with a chronograph function and one-minute tourbillon, and is available only in limited editions, including a new platinum edition with a blue dial.

Audemars Piguet Supersonnerie is the loudest chiming watch

Hopping across the border from Switzerland to Germany, A. Lange & Söhne’s first repeating wristwatch, the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, was an instant classic. A far more intuitive system than a normal minute repeater, it chimes the time in units of 10 rather than 15, the same way we read it off on a conventional analogue clock. The gong and hammers placed on the front of the watch allow the wearer (and inevitable admirers) to see something truly rare: the repeater at work.

Panerai's Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon is capable of chiming both local and a second time zone

Another worthy investment, Panerai’s 49mm red or white gold oeuvre not only offers sweet-sounding chimes, but also two special features. For starters, the Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon GMT PAM00600 is capable of chiming both local and a second time zone. Like the Zeitwerk, it’s also a decimal repeater – the fifth of its kind in history. Its manually wound Caliber P.2005/MR boasts a one-minute tourbillon and a 96-hour power reserve.

The equally ambitious Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon from Vacheron Constantin would be a “simple” traditional minute repeater if it weren’t for the one-minute tourbillon performing gravity-defying revolutions within the manually wound Caliber 2755 TMR. Beautifully understated in 44mm pink gold or platinum, the watch’s musical notes can be activated by the slide on the left side of the case.

Chiming Watches Vacheron Constantin

Telling time by ear is an underappreciated art, but certainly not a lost one. For the lover of history or the watch aficionado, a minute repeater would make the perfect gift. After all, there’s no time – or chime – like the present.

Blancpain showcases stunning Metiers d’Art collection in Hong Kong

Anyone who stepped into Blancpain’s Metiers d’Art exhibition at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental might have wondered if they’d entered an art gallery instead. Given the impeccable artistry of the stunning timepieces on display, the mistake was understandable.

Guests were treated to a fantastic display of one-of-the-kind watches such as the Villeret Ganesh and cherry blossom-themed 8 Jours Manuelle. The individual dial of each Metiers d’Art creation showcased one of four incredible techniques: enamel painting, detailed engraving, damasquinage and shakudo.

Opening night attendees were invited to learn more about each unique style and watch live demonstrations of dial painting and engraving in an exclusive and intimate setting. The latter is also part of Blancpain’s new bespoke service which allows high-end watch collectors to personalise and influence their own Metiers d’Art design.

Blancpain’s Vice President and Head of Sales Marc Junod described the unique collection and bespoke service as a dual-pronged approach to introduce the 282-year-old watch brand to a new audience, while also building a more interactive relationship with high-end watch collectors.

“It’s one thing to come up with a watch and launch it at the Baselworld watch fair,” explained Junod, “it’s much more interesting to sit down with someone from the get go and come up with an idea and a unique creation. It becomes a personal journey.”

Bell & Ross unveils limited-edition watch at Search for Extremes event

Bell & Ross celebrated the launch its new Watch Beyond campaign in Hong Kong with an exciting, multifaceted exhibition dubbed Search for Extremes. Attendees were among the first to lay eyes on the new limited-edition Burning Skull Bronze watch. We sat with Bell & Ross General Manager Mr. Fabien de Nonancourt to find out more.

What is the inspiration behind the “Search for Extremes” exhibition?

From the beginning, Bell & Ross created watches especially for military use. We were dedicated to manufacturing high-performance watches that could withstand intense pressures.

Drawing from that, we have launched the Search for Extremes exhibition. The exhibition is divided into three distinct categories: air, earth and sea. For air, we drew inspiration from fighter pilots. For earth we looked to extreme car racing such as Formula 1. For our newest category, sea, we were inspired by deep sea divers.

Tell us about the new watch model you are unveiling at the exhibition.

The new watch that we are unveiling is very special for two reasons. Firstly, we’ve taken two of our iconic Concept Skull pieces and merged them into one spectacular creation: the BR01 Burning Skull Bronze. Secondly and more importantly, this limited-edition timepiece will only be available in Hong Kong and China, nowhere else.

What are Bell & Ross’ plans for the future?

Firstly, we are looking to grow our footprint in Asia, which began with the launch of Bell & Ross subsidiaries across the continent.

We are also planning to expand into the luxury segment. Bell & Ross already has an impeccable record of Swiss watch making craftsmanship, so it’s a very logical next step.

What is your favourite Bell & Ross watch?

My favourite watch is the BRV2-94 Bellytanker, which I’m wearing right now. It’s part of a 500-piece limited edition model inspired by fighter planes from WWII. It perfectly represents Bell & Ross’ ability to blend its military heritage with cutting-edge modern design.

Thank you.

Hammer Time: One-off watches hit HK before Only Watch Charity Auction

Unique luxury timepieces were displayed in Hong Kong before heading to the Only Watch Charity Auction. Elizabeth Doerr, co-founder of Quill & Pad, dissects eight of the best ones.

Only Watch has become a much anticipated fixture of the high watchmaking scene. Taking place every two years, 2017 plays host to the seventh edition since Luc Pettavino called this auction to life in support of the Monegasque Association against Muscular Dystrophy (AMM), which battles the rare Duchenne strain of the disease. Pettavino’s son, Paul, who died from the condition last year at the age of 21, inspired the former to take up the charitable cause.

Collectors will find rarities here that can be had nowhere else and, better yet, all proceeds go toward research for this neuromuscular disease. Over the course of six auctions in 12 years, Pettavino has raised more than HK$235 million for the cause. For brands big and small alike, the publicity that comes along with the world tour preceding the auction makes it worth every cent to donate a specially-made, one-off watch.

Immediately following the world tour exhibiting the pieces, which hits Hong Kong 23-24 October, the auction will take place on 11 November in Geneva under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco. Here are eight highlights from the auction suiting a cross-section of tastes – each watch unique in its own right.

Patek Philippe’s Reference 5208T-010 is an obvious investor’s choice. With its chronograph, instantaneous perpetual calendar and minute repeater, it’s an extremely collectable watch that’s likely to increase in value over the years – especially as it has a titanium case, a metal rarely used at Patek Philippe.

With a high estimate of more than HK$8 million, this is the auction’s top lot, and it comes with a complimentary visit to the workshops plus a private lunch with Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern.

If you’re looking for artistic merit, the titanium-encased Armin Strom Manual Hunt Slonem Edition for Only Watch is a perfect fusion of art and mechanical excellence. New York artist Hunt Slonem – best known for his Neo-Expressionist practice – has decorated the watch front with references to his critically-acclaimed series of rabbit paintings using a transfer process.

In addition to this watch, the winning bidder will receive a hand-signed original artwork from the artist entitled Rex – a 46cm by 31cm oil painting created using metal pigmented paint. High estimates surpass HK$150,600.

The minimalist, however, would be drawn to H. Moser & Cie’s Venturer Concept Only Watch – the ideal acquisition for lovers of simple yet striking pieces (high estimate: HK$240,200).

The finely finished, manually wound movement features a funky red balance bridge and an unusual red fumé dial – subtle references to the flag of Monaco, the birthplace of this auction and the home of AMM.

Offering a taste of the rare and unique is Fabergé’s Visionnaire Chronograph, presented in a sporty black and yellow outfit called “If life gives you lemons” (DLC-treated titanium).

Expected to sell for up to HK$383,000, this is a chronograph like no other. It’s able to provide both time and chronograph measurements using only hands that extend from the centre of the dial thanks to an innovative automatic movement by Agenhor.

Sure to put a smile on your face, the Slim d’Hermès L’Heure Impatiente Only Watch Edition (high estimate: HK$448,200) incorporates the whimsy of a novel complication in the “impatient” countdown hour, but does so in masculine grey titanium. The latter aspect is surprising, considering that the French powerhouse rarely utilises the high-tech metal to house its timepieces.

The Laurent Ferrier x Urwerk Arpal One LF-UR1 (high estimate: HK$570,450) offers an opportunity to own a unique watch borne out of a collaboration between two brands with styles on opposite ends of the spectrum. This timepiece doubles the fun with its wandering hours, sand-blasted satellites and exclusive polished alloy called ARPAL+ (specifically developed for this unique watch), making it a visceral feast for the senses.

For lovers of rare semi-precious stones, Jaquet Droz’s Grande Seconde Off-Centered Cuprite could be just the ticket with its minimalist dial crafted in ultra-rare cuprite, an oxide mineral with a vibrant red hue that gives away its origin as a minor ore of copper.

It is combined with red gold hands and subdial outlines matching the precious metal case for an overall graceful and unique appearance. In contrast, the watch’s high-tech mechanical movement with silicon balance spring can be viewed from the back. Its high estimate comes in at HK$330,600.

Our last timepiece is a treat for fashionistas everywhere: the Chanel J12-XS (high estimate: HK$366,700). Crafted in white gold, black ceramic and onyx with baguette-cut diamonds and embroidered calfskin, it is effortlessly chic. As the cherry on top, the winning bidder will be granted passage to Chanel’s ready-to-wear fashion show in March 2018.

Haven’t found your dream watch yet? Discover all 50 timepieces at www.onlywatch.com. Each and every piece was either specifically made for this auction, or is a one-off version of an iconic model.

The Only Watch Charity Auction will be held on Saturday, 11 November at 2:30pm (Geneva time).
