“I adapt very easily. I can be comfortable in any sort
of situation you put me into”

Two important men in my life…

  • I was working for my father and was always overshadowed by him, and not allowed to cry in front of him. He said: “Excuses are just excuses. Fix it. Face it.” I had to constantly prove my creative output to him. All of  these make me stronger Today.
  • My husband is left-brained, strategic and business-minded — a great planner. We complement each other so well in each single aspect, which is beautiful.

Starting a business is tough, how I did it..

  • Have a genuine passion for what you do, not falling into habits of working simply to work.
  • Commit to it 100%. If you don’t believe in it, no one does. Stand on your own feet.
  • Find the right partner and people for you to work and surround yourself.
  • “You are what you give, not what you are given” is what I was told in my early adult life.

Women’s Resilience: as tough as natural diamond- Alison Chan El Azar

Women's Resilience As tough as natural diamond gafencu total circle alison chan el azar
Hong Kong Influencer Alison Chan El Azar wears Portraits of Nature by De Beers High Jewellery Collection

“I’m adventurous, determined, and spontaneous”

Alison didn’t always know what she wanted in life, but she knows that she can do something big, something important. She is always working to be a better version of herself – just like a natural diamond – when it’s polished and incorporated into a piece of jewellery, it will transform into a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

My Struggles:

  • I was feeling dark and lost in my teenage years, as my parents got divorced…
  • Thinking how to transition to the next chapter in my life and conquer the fears.
  • Give up other aspects of my life for being a full-time mom and my kids.
  • Who am I outside of mom, outside of my kids?

How I conquer my hard times:

  • It’s okay to feel lost and have doubt in certain stages of your life.
  • Waking up every day feeling motivated is just unrealistic. Do not pretend everything is alright.
  • You don’t need to be perfect or a billionaire.
  • It’s all about accepting where you’re at.
  • Exercise and be grateful.

What I’m looking for now:

  • I believe I can do something.
  • I look for something on the side besides being a mom.
  • I want to live a happy and simple life with purpose.

7 stunning dive watch models that blend beautiful form with true functionality

Once upon a (not so long ago) time, dive watches were predominantly tools of necessity. Given the inherent dangers and limitations of the pastime – limited oxygen supply, underwater pressure, restricted visibility – they were vital safety aids that kept divers alive. So, these timepieces historically catered to the unique challenges of the sport. In 1926, Rolex developed the Oyster, the first hermetically-sealed waterproof wristwatch. Six years later, Omega developed the Marine, capable of withstanding depths of up to 135m.

Today, however, such wrist adornments are more often worn as statement pieces rather than underwater assistants. Be that as it may, the world’s leading watchmakers remain dedicated to crafting durable, legible and eminently usable diving chronometers that are as elegant as they are functional. Here, we highlight seven particular standout models worthy of attention.

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet

dive-watch-Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet-gafencu.jpg
Photo: Blancpain

First on our list is Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantième Complet, the latest interpretation of its 1956-released Fifty Fathoms dive watch. Kitted out with a full annual calendar complication, it nevertheless maintains its roots as a diving aid, boasting heightened durability with its titanium grade 23 alloy case, as well as an almost industrial all-grey, fully matte look. It’s also equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale to time dives, with the calibre 6654.P self-winding movement churning out a generous 72-hour power reserve.

Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Bianco

dive-watch-Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro-gafencu.jpg
Photo: Panerai

Similarly drawing from its rich history is Panerai with the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Bianco. While the Submersible only debuted as a solo model in 1998, the design harks back to watches made for the Egyptian Navy back in 1956. Featuring the iconic circle-in-a-square shaped case, it comes fitted with a calibre P.900 movement and can withstand depths of 300m. An olive-green strap rounds out a vintage-inspired utilitarian aesthetic.

Oris Aquis NY Harbor Limited Edition

Swiss-based Oris has also embraced a verdant look for its Aquis NY Harbor Limited Edition. The watchmaker is known for championing environmental sustainability projects across the globe; in this instance, profits from the 2,000-piece release are earmarked for the Billion Oyster Project, an initiative launched in hopes to reseed that number of oysters into New York waters. The watch features a yellowy-green mother-of-pearl dial that’s burnished with super legible Super-LumiNova-coated hour markers and hour and minute hands, all housed in a 41.5mm steel case and powered by an automatic calibre 400 movement.

Richard Mille RM 032 Voiles de Saint Barth

dive-watch-Richard Mille RM 032 Voiles de Saint Barth-gafencu.jpg
Photo: Richard Mille

For something more outré, Richard Mille unveiled the RM 032 Voiles de Saint Barth at the 11th Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille regatta in April. Characterised by an eye-catching Caribbean blue-on-white Quartz TPT aesthete, it offers optimal water resistance and durability thanks to the grade 5 titanium case middle. Blending a plethora of colours to increase legibility, the over-sized 60-minute counter rotating bezel makes for equally easy viewing. Limited to just 120 pieces, this technical timepiece is certified to withstand pressures to a depth of 300m.

IWC Aquatimer Automatic

dive-watch-IWC-Aquatic-Automatic-gafencu
Photo: IWC

A more minimalist approach comes courtesy of IWC’s latest Aquatimer Automatic, available with either a blue or black dial and the buyer’s choice of rubber strap or steel bracelet. Powered by the brand-new calibre 32111 movement, the 42mm dive watch eschews the traditional external rotating bezel in favour of an internal printed 60-minute scale lining the angled flange of the dial edge, thereby doing away with a secondary crown and minimising the risk of water creeping in.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller

Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller 4000

The next entrant, Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller, may not be so recent a release as others on our line-up, but it still merits particular mention. Crafted from Rolesor, its triple waterproof system allows this timepiece to withstand waters as much as 1,220m deep. A staggering feat of engineering indeed.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Titanium

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Titanium-1.jpg
Photo: Omega

That, however, pales in comparison to Omega’s Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Titanium. As befits the final sub-aquatic timepiece on our list, it serves up an unimaginable water resistance to a depth of 6,000m – a greater drop than from the tallest mountain in Europe. It was this very watch, albeit in a concept form, that was strapped onto the Limiting Factor submarine during its record-breaking dive to 10,925m back in 2019. Painstakingly crafted from sandblasted grade 5 titanium and fitted with an athletic Nato-style strap, this timepiece stylishly represents the very pinnacle of dive watch-making.

Amanpulo resort in the Philippines offers travellers heavenly peace on earth

Seasoned travellers to the Philippines will no doubt have traced their feet on the white sands of Boracay and dived into thrilling water sports in Cebu. And when it comes to luxury hotels, Manila is no stranger to the world of premium service and fine dining. But if you are longing for an exclusive, idyllic experience amid scenic beauty, then hopping onto a private plane in the capital will deliver you to the paradise that is Pamalican.

Home to more than 5,000 isles, the Philippines is celebrated for its beautiful beaches, sweet tropical fruits and fabulous resort islands providing blissful days of sun and surf. Many would rank the archipelagic province of Palawan as the best place in the country to fulfil these desires.

El Nido has been hailed as the jewel of Palawan, but as the travel-industry accolades accumulated, so did the tourists, and the once pristine resort has become crowded. So instead, bear east to an even more exquisite spot: the private island of Pamalican, better known as the location of Amanpulo.

Owned by Seven Seas Resorts and Leisure, and managed by Amanresorts – the brand behind some of the world’s most luxurious holiday retreats – Amanpulo opened in 1993 and over the decades has found favour with a host of A-list celebrities, Hollywood superstars and billionaires like Mariah Carey, Brad Pitt, Madonna, Beyoncé and Bill Gates.

Stepping onto the island hideaway elicits immediate royal treatment, but of course the trappings of paradise come at a cost. Amanpulo is also famous for being the most expensive private-island resort in the Philippines, with guests shelling out up to and beyond US$8,000 per night for a villa where simplicity spells luxury and the doors open wide to nature. It’s a high price to pay for days spent merely lounging around, but for those seeking an ultra-exclusive getaway from the busy outside world, then Amanpulo is the place to stay.

Private Arrival

True to its moniker, this is ‘Peace Island’; aman is Sanskrit for peace, while pulo means island in Tagalog. It lies 360km south of Manila and is only accessible by private plane. Upon arrival at Manila airport, the jet-set are transferred by car to Amanpulo’s private lounge terminal to await a same-day connecting flight to the island. Plied with refreshments and snacks, they enjoy a glimpse of the exemplarily service and hospitality awaiting at their final destination. After 70 minutes of airtime, guests disembark to a heart-warming welcome before being ushered to their designated suite in a private golf cart, which is the main means of getting anywhere on the island – and we do mean anywhere.

Immersed in Nature

Set on the beachfront or secluded within the forest, accommodation at Amanpulo is within a standalone villa. The smaller of these are called casitas; inspired by traditional Filipino huts, dwellers may benefit from  its plunge pool or magnificent hillside views. Those residing in more expansive luxury in their own villa have a private pool and dedicated staff. Fully immersed within the natural landscape of the island, accompanied by the gentle soundtrack of ocean waves, chirping birds and trees rustling in the wind, guests can bask in a cocoon of tranquillity and relaxation, hidden from prying eyes and curious onlookers.

Fruits of the Sea

Serving the freshest seasonal ingredients that the island has to offer, the resort’s four dining locations proffer an array of international flavours, from Filipino and Japanese to Italian and Mediterranean. Locally caught seafood and organically grown vegetables and herbs from the resort’s own farm and gardens take pride of place on menus, and gourmands are spoilt for choice by the quality and variety of dishes that they can discover throughout their stay.

Over at the Beachclub, umbrellas and sun loungers spill from an open-air pavilion and deck onto the white sand, while afloat on the Sulu Sea, the thatched-roofed floating Kawayan Bar, constructed of bamboo, provides all-day chilling on the water with a bespoke cocktail in hand.

Alternatively, there are several secluded spots for a picnic where the hills and ocean serve as the dining backdrop. The Gary’s Nest vantage point is one such example, offering the picture-perfect alfresco private picnic spot. For honeymooners and others so inclined, a one-of-a-kind romantic fine-dining experience can be arranged on the beach underneath a blanket of stars. Imagine a feast of grilled seafood or meats with generous selections of delicious sides, and a delectable sweet ending, around a bonfire. Hiring a private chef for the evening is another option for a personalised meal to remember.

Ocean Escapades

Time slips happily by on the island with sedate aquatic adventures such as a fishing expedition or a sunset cruise, or scuba diving amid coral reefs teeming with marine life. But perhaps the most popular water-based activity is kite surfing on a crystal-clear lagoon of gentle waves and generous winds. Cutting-edge equipment from Naish and a team of accomplished kitesurfers and guides enable thrill-seekers of all abilities, including absolute beginners, to take to the water and the air.

Those who prefer to stay dry will find plentiful delights when circumnavigating the island or strolling along the powder-white beach. Pamalican island is a nesting site for both green and hawksbill turtles. If vacationing between December and March, you may spy turtle hatchlings hurtling across the sand and scattering into the ocean under the moonlight, an utterly awe-inspiring sight.

During the day, a bird-watching tour provides chance to commune with nature, while a varied assortment of other activities and sports includes tennis, cycling and a jungle obstacle course.

Top of the Hilot

After a long day in or beside the ocean, guests might find themselves hankering for repose away from the rush of the great outdoors. Located on the northern peak of the island, the resort’s gorgeous hilltop holistic wellness centre, Aman Spa, pampers with hilot, a soothing traditional Filipino massage that relaxes tension and rebalances internal energy by alternating hot and cold therapies using banana leaves and coconut oil.

Encompassing a pilates studio, a salon, a yoga and meditation pavilion, a hydrotherapy suite and more, the retreat provides comprehensive self-care services. Its resident wellness therapist and fitness specialists offer spa treatments targeted to guests’ differing needs. After all, relaxation and wellness go hand in hand with a place of peace – and Amanpulo is certainly that.

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches

Purchasing an elaborate timepiece is certainly a hefty investment. Yet, unlike other fleeting luxury indulgences, watches – if properly maintained – can hold if not increase their value. These prime examples of haute horology are also the perfect mementos to bequeath onto future generations. And what better way to ensure your legacy stands the test of time than to sink your cash into a chronometer equipped with the long-lasting perpetual calendar complication.

For the uninitiated, the perpetual calendar keeps hyper-accurate track of the day, date, and month without ever needing to be hand-wound. What’s more, it even takes leap years into account, with the finest such pieces capable of ticking on for centuries without adjustment. Intrigued? Then perhaps these seven standout timepieces below may tickle your fancy …

Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Perpetual Calendar

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - jaeger-loulre

Blending an athletic appeal and timeless elegance with true aplomb is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Polaris Perpetual Calendar. Housed in a 42mm pink gold case, this latest iteration of the revived Polaris sports watch line sees the brand’s 2013-debuted perpetual calendar calibre movement updated to churn out a lengthier 70-hour power reserve, while the moonphase indicator is now updated to showcase the stars from the southern hemisphere. Four subdials grace the cardinal directions of its blue fascia, showcasing the day, date, month, year and lunar phase.

A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna”

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - a lange & sohne

A sleeker interpretation of this classic function comes in the form of German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne’s Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna”, a chronometer that cleverly uses both sides of its dial to showcase its many intricate complications. Here, the argenté-hued dial features three interlocking hour, minute and second subdials that together track the day, date and month. On the reverse, some elements of the calibre L096.1 movement peek out through the sapphire crystal caseback that is otherwise dominated by a prominent moonphase display.

IWC 100-piece Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Toto Wolff x Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team”

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - IWC Big Pilot

Eschewing traditional colours for a more vibrant hue is IWC’s 100-piece Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Toto Wolff x Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team”, launched ahead of the June Formula One British Grand Prix of which the brand is a proud sponsor. Created to celebrate Toto Wolff – the mastermind behind Mercedes’ record eight consecutive constructors’ titles – its racing heritage is evidenced by the lightweight appeal of a proprietary Ceratanium alloy case, while the dial’s accents have been burnished in the team’s signature Petronas green.

The Naked Watchmaker x Frederique Constant Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Limited Edition

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - fredrique constant

Meanwhile, a more vintage vibe is on offer from Fredrique Constant with The Naked Watchmaker x Frederique Constant Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Limited Edition, created in collaboration with educational resource foundation The Naked Watchmaker. Awash in heritage brown, its skeletonised domed dial affords direct views of the in-house FC-775 self-winding perpetual calendar movement, which offers a 38-hour power reserve. Limited to a release of 99 pieces, it comes with a relatively affordable price tag of €9,995.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - vacheron constantin

Similarly open-worked, albeit in a more attention-grabbing 18K 5N pink gold case, is Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton. An impressive feat of watchmaking, its innovative Calibre 1120 QPSQ/1 perpetual calendar movement is wholly skeletonised. What’s more astonishing is the thinness of the complex wristwatch is just a scant 8.1mm. Coming with pink gold straps as standard, buyers can also opt for tool-free changes to blue rubber or blue calf leather options as well.

Glashütte Original’s new Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - glasshutte

For a more minimalist appeal, consider Glashütte Original’s new Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar, whose galvanised rose opaline dial is punctuated with a bevy of blue touches that allow easy viewing of the day, date and month apertures as well as the moonphase display at 8 o’clock. Fitted with a staggering 100-hour power reserve, sleek blue alligator leather straps round out the allure of this 100-piece release.

Patek Philippe Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5374-300P

Make a date with one of these fabulous perpetual calendar watches - Patek Philippe

The final entrant on this list of prime perpetual calendar watches is none other than Patek Philippe. Its Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5374-300P is, simply put, an outré affair, prominently garnished with a plethora (241 to be exact) of sparkling baguette-cut diamonds along its case and bezel. Not only does its elegant blue dial proudly showcase the complex mechanism in all its glory, its self-winding calibre R 27 Q movement is also equipped with a charming chiming complication. A masterclass in the art of blending haute horlogerie with the watchmaker’s craft, it’s an apt new chapter for the legendary watchmaker who created the first-ever perpetual calendar wristwatch.

Brandon Chau on founding Noblesse Lifestyle Group, and his latest venture, Beyond Sleep

Deep in the heart of Central, serial entrepreneur Brandon Chau brings sustainable, premium beds and bedding products to life at his bespoke store aimed at helping customers get a healthier night’s sleep.

Brandon Chau in Yellow beige suit by Sartoria Tofani Napoli

What’s the inspiration behind Noblesse Lifestyle Group?
I started this business 10 years ago. I was a barrister at the time. So basically I followed in my parent’s footsteps and decided to go into law. But then after I practised for around three to four years I decided that law wasn’t my thing. I’m a bit of an introvert and to be honest I was very stressed out on a daily basis. It wasn’t something I wanted to commit my whole life to so I decided to start my own business instead.

At the time, I was travelling in the UK and I came across a bed store called Viceroy. I thought it was an amazing brand with a long heritage, everything was handmade, natural materials. So I decided to try it out for myself and I fell in love with the product and thought that maybe this was something I could bring to Hong Kong – not only to start a business but to share something I’m deeply fond of.

The idea behind Noblesse is a one-stop shop to provide premium, lifestyle services. We don’t just focus on beds and bedding but also on a range of lifestyle products that focus on wellbeing and sustainability.

people-interview-brandonchau-noblesselifestylegroup-beyondsleep-hongkong-gafencu-3
Brandon Chau in Pink jacket by Cesare Attolini Napoli

It’s quite a leap from barrister to entrepreneur. Was it an easy transition?
It was actually very difficult. Being a barrister is very challenging. You have to be very sharp, very on point. You need a lot of time for preparation. But starting a business is challenging as well – but on a very different level. You have to come up with a concept and then realise that concept – taking it from on paper to an actual business.

In the beginning I had to pitch my ideas to the brands and then persuade them to let me be their authorised dealer. Then come up with a business model, a business plan and then hire a team, train the team – none of that was easy. Of course our type of products were rare in the market 10 years ago – a natural, luxury bed product. It took some time for people to fully accept and realise the value of our products. Helping them to improve their sleep but also being conscious of the environment.
We have around 40 staff across all the different businesses. Human Resources is one of the most challenging aspects of the business. But I am very grateful over the years to have gathered a very good team. The key to every business is having a good team to run it.

Brandon Chau in Brown check jacket by WW Chan & Sons Tailors Hong Kong

When do you get your best ideas?
Travelling. Most of my business ideas come while I’m travelling, if not all actually. For example, the concept for Attire House came while I was travelling through Italy, France, Japan and Korea. Because when you stay too long in one place your mindset gets stuck.

In 2016, you established Attire House. Can you elaborate a little on the concept?
It arose out of my passion for classic menswear – and the whole gentlemanly lifestyle. I wanted to do something a bit different. Not just start a store, but an iconic concept that is all inclusive. So, it includes a cocktail bar, a cigar lounge, a barber shop and a bespoke menswear shop all under the same roof. That was the original idea.

The business has gone through a lot of changes over the years. This concept was the first of its kind in Hong Kong, I would say. It’s not easy running a concept of all different operations in one place. First of all you need a large space, with a large rent. Then, you have different teams with different hours. So, over the years we decided to spin off into different concepts. So the bar has its own separate identity, Bar Deluxe. It’s a direct collaboration with a bar from Tokyo, run by this legendary bartender in Japan. We’ve been running it for five years now and it is becoming a popular spot to go to.

The barber shop has merged with the cigar lounge, which is called Bertie’s Cigars. We started it around four years ago. It’s actually named after the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, King Edward VII, nicknamed Bertie. He was a bit of a rakish prince back in the day and he liked smoking cigars and horse racing. So, the club is cheekily named after him.

“The Attire House concept arose out of my passion for classic menswear – and the whole gentlemanly lifestyle. It includes a cocktail bar, a cigar lounge, a barber shop and a bespoke menswear shop all under the same roof”

How do you fit family life – and raising three boys – into your busy schedule?
It’s crazy! That’s the straightforward answer. But to be honest, I think the pandemic helped a bit because it gave people the chance to spend more time at home, for which I am quite grateful. I got to know my sons a bit more, especially my young son, because he just turned three. The pandemic has been a huge disruption, but it also means I spend more time with my children. And the bond has definitely deepened over the past two years.

“The pandemic has been a huge disruption but it also means I spend more time with my children. And the bond has definitely deepened over the past two years”

In 2021, you branched out again with Beyond Sleep. How does it tie in with sustainability and wellness?
This is our tenth year, so we decided to come up with a new concept – Beyond Sleep. Our angle has always been on the history, the luxury and craftsmanship but it’s also important that they are all natural products. So, not only good for health but also good for the environment. There has always been a sustainability angle that we haven’t pushed enough. Sleep is very important. Something that people sometimes overlook. But part of that are the concepts of sustainability and wellness. This is what we want to focus on with our new branding.

For the front of the shop we have done something different, to make it look like a sleep museum. So you see a wall with all the natural materials that are used with our products. Where the products are from and how they are processed can be fully explained. There is full transparency with our products that we can share with our customers. People want to know what they’re buying. We also have a sleep pod. It looks like a spaceship. Within that sleep pod, not only can you experience our bed, it’s also fully integrated with smart-code technology – so you can voice control the temperature, the lighting, the air purifier, the music and the mood.

Then we have the pillow bar, kind of inspired by my own cocktail bar, with more than 30 different pillows. Mostly from Switzerland and Austria, all made with natural materials. Different people, with different sleeping habits, require different pillows.

people-interview-brandonchau-noblesselifestylegroup-beyondsleep-hongkong-gafencu-4
Brandon Chau in Blue Chinese Tang jacket by AWong & Co.

What was the last cigar you smoked?
Cigars are my vice. One of my less healthy habits. The last cigar I smoked is a small brand called Juan Lopez. It’s a double robusto, which is quite a fat cigar.

You also practice martial arts. What is your secret to being a good martial artist?
I’ve been interested in martial arts for a very long time. My parents sent me to learn kung fu because they were worried I might get bullied. I became fascinated with Bruce Lee. I watched his movies and I became blown away. He’s still my idol. Now I practice Wing Chun. A traditional martial art popularised by Ip Man and also learned by Bruce Lee. Martial arts helps me to focus. It’s like a moving meditation. It helps you to reset. It’s something you need to do on a regular basis and practice and practice and practice. You need perseverance.

Thank you.

These eyewear specialists go beyond vision with new tech, premium materials and modern designs

Choosing the right lens for your reading glasses is the first priority to consider. Factors such as grading (the magnification of the lens required for each eye) and weight of the lens, and of your spectacles overall, are also key. But reading glasses have come a long way since they first came into existence. Now, style is as much as of a selling point as substance.

Fortunately, there are any number of eyewear specialists in Hong Kong that can give you both great advice on what you need to see clearly, as well as look great. Read on, as Gafencu takes a closer squiz at some of Hong Kong’s most promising eyewear specialists.

The Right Optics

Before you go picking out your next fashion statement, it’s important to feel comfortable with your glasses as well as ensuring your choice of eyewear is as much functional as fashionable. To ensure you choose the right lens for your eyes, it’s essential to make an appointment with a reputable optometrist to test and assess both your eyesight and the overall health of your eyes – determining if you are short sighted, long sighted or have some other issue that impairs your vision.

A tip to picking the right optics is to note that each eye requires a different level of magnification. Choosing the right lens is essential to enable clear vision but to avoid health issues such as squinting, eye strain and headaches. Another factor to consider is the composition, and weight, of your lens. Generally, durable, high-quality, scratch-resistant plastic (also referred to as acrylic) lenses have the advantage over those made from glass, as the latter tends to be heavier and is easily cracked. In modern optometry, plastic lenses are preferred – ensuring the wearer has the most lightweight and comfortable experience when wearing their eyewear.

3D and Customised

One of Hong Kong’s up-and-coming bespoke eyewear providers is Blackzsmith Optical – making a name for itself by applying cutting-edge technology to its spectacle-making process via 3D printing.

By obtaining facial data with 3D-scanning technology, the bespoke eyewear is created based on customers’ facial 3D models. The process identifies 72 key points on the face and with the data obtained providing a professional basis for the frame design. In excess of 20 different parameters of the 3D eyewear that can be adjusted, including frame size, nose bridge width and temple length and more – with all these parameters coming together to ensure the perfect fit and wearability of the frame.

This label also prides itself on creating spectacles that are handcrafted by the technician with an eye for design and a passion for creativity. The luxurious sensibility of the brand’s collections focuses on traditional skills and immaculate craftsmanship. Blackzsmith is gaining appeal among local Hong Kong pop stars as well as key opinion leaders. Some of the eyewear brands it stocks include Matsuda – which is a favourite of the Japanese imperial family no less. As well as rising eyewear brand Ahlem – creating a buzz among the likes of Beyoncé and Kate Moss, who are apparently two of the French brands most ardent admirers.

Horny Eyewear

For a spectacle specialist with a point of difference, look no further than Smith & Norbu. One of the key parts of a pair of the brand’s glasses design is the yak horn.

To tease out how this unlikely turn of events came about, we need to go back to 2007. This was when Belgian entrepreneur Benoit Ams – on a trip to Tibet – was transfixed by craft works made from yak horn. The germ of an idea was sown and from there the concept of creating high-end spectacle frames using this fit-for-purpose material was born and eventually found its place in modern eyewear designs.

The manufacturer explains that natural yak horn is not only a lightweight and highly resistant material, it’s also a surprisingly vibrant natural product with subtle colour nuances that make genuine horn superior to other man-made materials. The use of natural horn makes the frame more comfortable to wear than synthetic alternatives and is also an anti-allergic product.

Manufacturing a piece of spectacles involves as many as 50 separate operations to create a single pair of frames and it takes meticulous attention to detail to produce durable, high-quality eyewear. The process of horn-based spectacle manufacturing is even more precise. First, the horn is cut and pressed into horn plates. Then, individual plates are carefully selected based on their colour pattern. Each finished product is then assembled with the brand’s signature rivet.

Vintage Chic

But if you prefer to stick with a classic look, or something that’s a little on the edgy retro side, look no further than Absolute Vintage. Since becoming established in 2010, it’s a brand that prided itself on creating bespoke spectacles that are designed specifically to fit the contours of Asian faces. Absolute Vintage also incorporates unique Hong Kong themes and characteristics into its designs. So much so that it has even been featured as as a highlight on the Hong Kong Tourism Board website.

Bengogh, the eyewear specialist’s chief designer, draws inspiration from the city’s surroundings in each of the brand’s designs, with many named after the streets of Hong Kong – capturing the essence of local culture in each pair of spectacles created. The brand also challenges the notion that reading glasses are just an optical aid, but rather promotes the idea that eyewear are a personalised accessory – and form an essential part of the wearer’s daily attire.

Focusing on classic spectacles and frames with an iconic visage, Absolute Vintage does away with cumbersome glasses by producing personalised, top-notch frames with a vintage aesthetic, while incorporating a range of styles, including round, cat’s eye and square, in a variety of bold colours and, of course, tortoiseshell.

A worldly sensibility comes together within this Hong Kong Garden apartment

Nestled on the upper floors of the Hong Kong Garden high rise on Seymour Road in Mid-levels, this 2800 sq ft family dwelling is home to a couple and their two young children. A space to entertain, relax, play and still enjoy the luxury of privacy, the unit was completely refurbished to create a London-inspired ambience with touches of international glamour – the vision of Thomas Griem, founder of TG Studio London.

Stepping into the hallway from the entrance, the feature wall opposite combines modernity with sophistication. Constructed out of timber sections and painted in dove blue, this feature not only sets the tone for the rest of the interior design, but also cleverly conceals the private quarters from the rest of the house behind a hidden door. The flooring, crafted from oak and finished in natural oil, also presents a recurring theme of wooden elements throughout the unit, as seen on the recessed shelving, door frames and concealed storage compartments.

Room to Grow

It’s in the main area where the home’s eclectic sensibility stands out most. Its large open plan gives way for modern touches and dynamic details to accentuate the space. The living and dining room, a mix of bohemian and modern aesthetics, welcomes guests into this convivial space. The walls are papered in elegant swatches that separates the different zones, while the unusually high ceilings add a deeper dimension to the space, which also afforded a generously proportioned matte bronze-finished joinery TV cabinet to stand – flamed with black granite to create a plinth to hold a fireplace below.

“Every room received careful attention to detail with the perfect finishes, fittings and furniture selections to highlight each space. Fabrics, decorations and art pieces were curated to create a holistic interior that pleases with a sophisticated aesthetic”, says Griem. The Ember rug by Rodaete, for example, extends across the living space, adding gravitas to the space while complementing the chic Leonard sofa from Italian brand Minotti and bespoke coffee table by US-based Chai Ming Studios. While lighting from Deltalight and Kelly Wearstler adds warmth.

Creative Curves

Behind the sofa, the curved bay windows also allowed the designer to get creative with making the most of the space with a desk that curves along the bend of the windows. Underneath, leather doors imbedded into the arrabascato window sill, cleverly hides away storage compartments at the owner’s discretion.

The dining room is situated parallel to the living room and partitioned with oak and stained glass that was manufactured locally. The space is tied together by a round Concorde dining table from Poliform and Casino chairs by Amy Somerville. Adding elegance is the patterned wallpaper and a Victorian-style ceiling lamp, as well as a curved pouf that fits snugly into the tailor-made banquette that is covered in a stunning upholstery fabric from Chase Erwin.

A miniature whisky bar to the side adds a subtle sophistication for when it’s time for a relaxing night cap to conclude the day. Each detail, whether the fabric, materials or design, exhibits the precision and careful consideration Griem had put into perfecting the space.

In contrast, the kitchen, directly connected to the dining room, features a minimalist Japanese aesthetic. Clean lines with muted colour tones allow for the space to evoke a calm and bright interior here, fitted with the latest appliances from Germany. The floor, laid out with a light grey veined pattern, harmonises with the warmth of the oak doors.

Things of Stone and Wood

The master suite is decked out with a walk-in closet and private bathroom fitted with rare taps from Boffi, veined marbling stone walls and a beautiful Hinoki wood Furo bathtub that is fronted by a large window that affords idyllic views of mid-levels, The Peak, and Central’s bustling streets. “The client’s brief was to find a stone that he had not seen before. We mixed top-notch Italian marble with local grey stone, to quietly support the colour and feel”, says Griem.

This feature of oak and lacquer finish resonates here, especially on the concealed desk in the master bedroom. The pull-out desk opposite the window doubles as a writing and vanity table. Within its confines, a hair dryer is built in along with a make-up drawer and storage for jewellery and accessories. “Storage is very important to our client.” says Griem “We thought of creating a really practical space with the warmth and luxurious feel of the timber veneer that covers every surface”.

But what really gives this intimate space its grounding feature is the exquisite detailing. The window sill is wrapped in leather from Alma and works as a surface to place jewellery and other accessories, but also contains hidden storage units. The handles for the wardrobes are the Quadrale from Serie Rare in cast bronze. Behind the bed is a feature wall made out of solid oak panels, cut into a three-dimensional pattern, while hanging lights by Holly Hunt and bedside tables from Chi Wing Lo flank the bed sides – making for a stunning effect.
