Going with the Flow: How best to apply feng shui at home

Feng shui, the ancient Chinese geomantic art of understanding the universe, is used to bring harmony and balance to a home and its residents. Geomantic principles and the practices of interior architecture and design often follow divergent paths, but ultimately, they align towards the same goal – creating a happy home brimming with an abundance of positive energy.

What is feng shui?
Literally translated as wind (feng) and water (shui), feng shui focuses on the invisible forces of the universe called qi, also known as energy. Practitioners believe that the flow of positive energy throughout a home promotes elevated moods, good health and prosperity, while an accumulated level of negative energy may have severe consequences, such as a failed business venture, bankruptcy, breakup or serious illness. According to feng shui master John Choi, who has accrued substantial knowledge of Eastern and Western preferences in modern home design, “Feng shui is more than just a superstition, it is a science and computation of how energy flows in our environment”.

How to use feng shui at home?
Firstly, determining the direction of the entrance is the most important step in enhancing feng shui in the home by turn. Then, you can focus on each room. An emphasis on rooms that you spend the most time in also greatly affects your well-being. In most cases, this is the bedroom, living room and kitchen. But take heed, as Choi says, “If the direction of the home is not accurate, the entire process and arrangement can amplify bad energy, instead of good”.

To apply feng shui at home, here are a few tips to take note of:

feng shui at home interior decorating living room gafencu luxury living

Tip 1: Start at the beginning
Starting from the the most crucial area – the living room – or in the case of larger homes, the entrance hall, the door represents the first checkpoint for qi to flow in. Keeping this area spacious and clutter-free is key. Wall consoles and cabinets that are flush to the wall are perfect for storage space and de-cluttering, allowing a vast area for energy to circulate.

Special attention should be paid to beams in your living area. Avoid placing sofas, chairs or the dining table underneath a beam, since its electromagnetic energy can cause an imbalance that may negatively impact health. This rule applies to beds too. Loose electric cables should also be kept away from furniture on which people sit or lie on.

Tip 2: Hang paintings that represent nature and happiness
Symbolism also plays a huge role in feng shui. Choi indicates that imagery such as family portraits, or paintings of natural landscapes like mountains and greenery, symbolise joy and support. These visuals can be hung against the wall behind the sofa or the desk in the study or home office.

Tip 3: Keep everything balanced
A balanced layout, in the form of a square or rectangle, and symmetric proportions also allow qi to flow seamlessly throughout the space. For instance, wall consoles or cabinets of the same height placed on each side of the wall, or arranging a seating area with a sofa facing the television flanked by two armchairs, will provide a calming sense of balance and harmony between people and environment.

Tip 4: Keep opposing elements from clashing
Moving on to the kitchen, a place used to nourish the members of the household, it is an area that can directly impact the health. Feng shui in this space is especially important if you spend a lot of time cooking and eating at home.

If a feng shui expert has been consulted here, it would be addressed that the position of the stove (fire) should not face directly opposite or beside the sink (water). This is because the two elements will clash and create an imblanace in the room. “One way to mitigate such a clash between fire and water is to place small pebbles between the stove and the sink”, says Choi.

Tip 5: Use an electric stove in open kitchens
Especially for open kitchens positioned in an inauspicious direction of the home, the gas stove should face away from the main entrance and the living room, as the fire energy will flow out into the area, affecting the health of the entire family. Electric or induction cookers, however, are fair game. If it isn’t possible to install an electic or induction cooker, one way to reduce the impact of negative fire energy would be by placing several metal rulers around the stove area or set up a six- to eight-foot convertible screen in between the kitchen and the sitting area or main entrance.

Tip 6: Position the bed mindfully
Turning the attention to the bedroom, it is a chamber where good feng shui is important, because of it serves as the space for rest and rejuvenation.

The headboard should never be in front of the window or next to the door as the rush of qi that flows in can cause restless nights and bad dreams. But in smaller rooms, where furniture arrangement is limited, there is a simple solution: place a wall console or any décor on a bedside table next to the bed to redirect the flow of energy away from you.

Tip 7: Use plants and mirrors to boost positive energy
Indoor plants such as bamboo and fresh flowers help boost the positive energy of the space. However, mirrors should be positioned mindfully. One common taboo among Chinese beliefs is that, although mirrors can reflect natural sunlight and positive energy around the room, it can also invite unwanted guests and spirits in when positioned towards the bed.

Tip 8: Decorate with auspicious colours
For those new to feng shui, painting the walls in neutral earth tones, such as beige and light grey, while avoiding bold shades of red and black, will generally benefit the home’s balance and serenity. To avoid sickness, decorate with earthy and metallic shades, like green, white, silver, gold or grey.

Tip 9: Seek out a professional
As a cautionary note, arranging elements in the home without an accurate feng shui reading is like playing with fire. A seemingly auspicious item placed in the wrong direction can result in grave consequences, so consult an expert before refreshing your décor.

General Setup for the year 2021
According to celebrated feng shui master Peter So’s, 2021 Chinese Almanac, the general set up of feng shui items that will welcome improved relationships, intelligence, good health, happiness and career growth are in the south, east, west, northeast and the centre, respectively. While the north, southeast, northwest and southwest directions correspond to minor and major sicknesses, disaster and gossip.

Referring to the illustrated grid, a pink object placed in the southwest direction will prevent gossip against you, while a music box and water element, such as a glass of water, in the southeast and north direction will reduce any impact of major illnesses. Water elements in the east and centre positions can help boost the intelligence and career energy, while four potted plants in the northeast direction will bring in more joy. To boost your relationship and fortune, place musical and water elements in the south and west grids.

Seven indoor plants to improve the feng shui in your home

Floral décor and potted plants have often filled the role of adding an element of nature to the home, enlivening the living space with vibrancy and dynamism. In Chinese culture, however, its benefits extend beyond aesthetics towards offering good luck and positive energy to home dwellers. Wood elements, as they are referred to in feng shui, promote positive energy, good fortune and a boost of happiness and growth in opportunities. Here, we’ve listed seven feng shui plants to increase the lucky and good fortune throughout the home.

  1. Bamboo plants
Bamboo plants, promote fortune and prosperity by purifying the room of pollutants and often give off a calming and balanced atmosphere. Thy enjoy warm temperatures and indirect sunlight, so it is best to keep them near the window but not underneath the air-conditioner. Placing them in the east corner of the room is said to promote intelligence and growth.
  1. Jade Plant
Jade plants, also known as money tree, feature small round leaves that resemble coins, hence its nickname. They are believed to bring in wealth and good fortune to home dwellers, and are pretty easy to care for. They love basking in sunlight, so make space for it by the window to nurture its growth and lucky-giving.
  2. Snakeplant
Known for its long wavy-like leaves, snakeplants are offer great feng shui and require minimal care. They thrive in humid and warm conditions and don’t like to be overwatered. It is best placed in the east on a dining table where family often gather together.
    Rubber fig
  4. Rubber Fig
The rubber plant is a large round-leaf foliage that, like jade plants, are believed to bring in abundance and good fortune in wealth. Though it may require the occasional pruning and pot transfer as it can grow quite high, it is a plant that thrives best indoors with indirect sunlight and is said to purify the air and balance the energy in the home, attracting prosperity.  Home owners would reap its benefits most by placing it in the study or next to their workspaces.
  1. Arrowhead plant
The Arrowhead plant is easily recognizable for its distinctive spade-like shape leaves. A closer look at it will show five leading lines that, in Chinese belief, represent the five elements: water, fire, earth, wood and metal, which is said to offer a balance of Yin and Yang. Cultivated as an indoor plant that inspires creativity and new ideas, this potted plant can grow anywhere between30cm to 1.5m indoors, so it can be on tables or on the floor by the desk in rooms with bright but indirect light.
  1. Golden Pothos
The golden pothos, also known as Devil’s Ivy, are viney foliage that boast glossy deep-green heart-shaped leaves is believed to absorb and purify the energy of its surroundings. Which is why it is suggested to keep them away from computers, televisions or anything that emits radiation, and is best placed high or hung (because of its long viney features) anywhere in the south eastside of the home in need of purification to promote good health, wealth and happiness.

Fengs to Come: Feng Shui master Thierry Chow, mystic moderniser….

What was it like growing up with a Feng Shui master for a father? Do you feel you were kind of fated to follow in his footsteps?

Having a dad who was a Feng Shui master was my normal. While I was growing up, the furniture was constantly being moved around  or rearranged and, to me, that never seemed strange or out of the ordinary. Once I started hanging out with other kids, though, – ones whose parents were doctors, lawyers or something – that’s when I realised that my family was  a little bit different.Despite that, as a child, I  had no interest in taking up the same vocation.

So, where did your passion lie?

I was very creative and very artistically inclined. I simply loved painting, drawing, fashion design… anything to do with the world of art in fact. And that was what dominated my academic career, right until I  graduated in Fine Arts in Canada.

feng shui

Given your initial disinterest, what ultimately drew you back to Feng Shui?

When I was about 24, I suddenly realised it held a fascination for me. That was when I returned to Hong Kong after graduating. I was also going through something of a rough time emotionally, while the culture shock of returning here after so many years away also sent me reeling.

I really needed something to get me off the bad place I found myself in. One day, I just turned to my dad and said:“Can I learn Feng Shui from you?” It was the result of something of a ‘Eureka’ moment for me and I knew immediately it was the right choice. I also instinctively felt I could integrate my own passion for art and fashion into Feng Shui. Since then, I can honestly say I have never looked back.

Was there any one thing your father taught you that proved particularly transformational?

Studying under my father truly opened my mind. Prior to that, I’d seen his calling as somewhat antiquated. Once I started learning it for myself, though, it changed the way I saw the whole world, giving me an entirely different perspective on life and making realise the endless possibilities that are out there. I knew then that I could never again box myself into some safe little world. It was a real paradigm shifting and I’ll always be grateful to him for that.

And how did that revelation change the way you saw Feng Shui’s role in the contemporary world?

As it’s such a traditional discipline, many people find it hard to reconcile with modern life. Through my training, though, I came to realise that, essentially, it’s all about the relationship between people and their environment. It teaches us how to arrange the space around ourselves in order that we can truly fulfil our potential, while still optimising our health and wellbeing.

feng shui

What is the best way then to boost your Feng Shui?

A focal point of my Go Lucky Method is that if your space is draining you, there’s something wrong with it. Any environment that makes you feel sluggish – rather than energised – is in need of adjustment. This doesn’t always have to be drastic. It can be as simple as adjusting your lighting or adding a splash of colour. It is, however, often best to replace any needlessly flashy decorations with objects that have personal connection.Rather than opting for an expensive centrepiece, for instance, it might be better to put the focus on a dish your grandmother gave you. Basically, if you have something associated with a positive memory, that’s always the way to go.

For Hong Kong in general, how do you see things going in the Year of the Rat?

For 2020, it’s all about the water and metal elements. This means we can look forward to good things within spheres influenced by such elements.Metal governs thinks likely jewellery and, by extension, finance, while water would relates to drinks, hotels, travel…These, then, are the sectors that will thrive over the next 12 months….

What about the negative things?

Broadly speaking, the past year has been dominated by trauma and heightened emotions. As a consequence, people need to focus on their mental wellbeing. They need to ask themselves what they need to trigger the healing process and restore their positive state, of mind.

With regard to more finite matters. as it is a water-element year, people may want to take more care when it comes their engagement with bodies of water, such as ocean or pools.

feng shui

You’ve just now launched your own proprietary take on Feng Shui – Go Lucky by Thierry Chow…

I always wanted to put a truly modern spin on traditional Feng Shui techniques and beliefs and this fulfil that’s vision. It is an approach that draws heavily on the Go Lucky method,  a very simple series of steps that people can follow in order to get the maximum benefits from their immediate environment. As part of it, Feng Shui consultations and design analysis is also on offer. There are also three different Feng Shui decorations that can be purchased, with each one representing something different and bringing different influences to bear on any given space.

Aside from Feng Shui, you are also known – and admired – for your personal sense of style…

I love fashion and I always have. It’s also something I have always wanted to integrate into my Feng Shui offer. With this in mind, I started attending a lot of fashion events in my professional capacity and tough people how to dress in compliance with the principals of Feng Shui.

feng shui

So Feng Shui has a bearing on fashion?

Absolutely. Feng Shui is all about changing your environment and clothes definitely help shape your demeanour. The five elements used in Feng Shui, as well a yin and yang, all come  from The Book of I Ching, which guides things like birth-chart readings. While it’s not exactly Feng Shui per se, I use it as a means of determining which colours or patterns that can help you balance your will optimise the balance of your chi…

On top of all that, is there anything else on the horizon?

Well I recently worked on new collection with Samuel Kung, the renowned master of jade. I’d already fallen in love with jade and, when I met him, we were both keen to collaborate. Jade and Feng Shui are  actually quite interlinked – it’ a material that absorbs a person’s energy and, as a result, changes colour over time. Looking to build on this, we launched the Samuel Kung x Thierry Chow Jade Collection. Comprising three jade rings and available from Lane Crawford, every item incorporates Feng Shui elements. Our next planned project, however, will be on a far grander scale…

feng shui

Away from all your many commitments, how do you like to relax?

I am a fanatic for anything  spiritual, so I really enjoy reading books on meditation and any that add to my understanding of the wider universe. I also love to meditate and to give free rein to my artistic side – and, of course, some retail therapy always goes down well too.

What is the key item on your bucket list?

Denmark. It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit. Although my husband is Canadian, that’s where his ancestors came from. I’ve seen so many gorgeous photographs of the country and I want to experience it all on a first-hand basis.

Finally, if you could meet any person, past or present…

I’m fascinated with reincarnation, so I would love to be able to meet one of my former selves. In terms of other people though, someone I would love to chat with would be Deepak Chopra, the famous author and renowned expert on alternative medicine. I’d love to be able to pick his brains about wellness techniques and the benefits of meditation.

Thank you.

Master geomancer Lee Shing-Chak predicts what lies ahead in the Year of the Pig

Dubbed ‘Hong Kong’s Youngest Feng Shui Master’ at just 19 years old, Lee Shing-Chak, expounds on what to expect in the Year of the Pig.

By the time you were 19, you were the youngest feng shui master in Hong Kong only at the age of 19. When did you know where your own future lay?

When I was growing up, my father made no secret of the fact that he wanted me to follow in his footsteps and become a practitioner of geomancy. I was just 10 years old when my formal training began. As I grew older, though, my creative leanings began to became more apparent, with a possible career as a designer being foremost in my mind. In 1988, though, as my father lay on his death bed, he repeatedly asked my mother if I was reconciled to dedicating my life to feng shui. It was his dying wish and I finally acquiesced before his passing.

Lee Shing-Chak

Do you think feng shui is at all threatened by the modern world?

When I first started out in the field about 30 years ago, many of my elders in the geomancy world and even my family advised me to seek out a different path, maintaining that faith in feng shui was in a sharp decline.

However, I accepted it as a challenge and, at that time, my way of proving the value of feng shui was through the accuracy of my predictions. This saw me foretell everything from horse racing results to the winner of the Miss Hong Kong beauty. Nowadays, though, I’m reconciled to the fact that there will always be those who believe in feng shui and those who don’t. Thankfully, the number who do believe remains reassuringly high. For my part, I’ve incorporated statistics into predicting what the future has in store. They complement the traditional geomantic metrics and have given me some fantastic successes.

Lee Shing-Chak

What do you see lying in store for Hong Kong during the Year of the Pig?

Well, the two decades from 2004 to 2023 actually constitute an ‘Eight Lucks’ period – a time of good fortune for medicine, education, childcare, insurance, property and mining. Within that period, however, the Year of the Pig will actually be the most turbulent time. My advice for 2019, then, is for those associated with such activities to stay the course, maintain an even balance and avoid any aggressive moves. Do not attempt any major new initiatives, no matter how tempting they may seem. The property market will also see some slumps, as will the stock market.

Lee Shing-Chak

Are there any particular negative happenings people should look out for this year?

Yes, the alignments of the stars seem to suggest that things will not go well on the medical front. In fact, a major illness or epidemic may emerge, something that will put many people at risk. I’d advise everyone to pay particular attention to their health and wellbeing throughout the course of this year. The current cosmic positioning of the stars also warns of subterranean dangers. There is potential for an incident involving an underground transportation system, the MTR for instance. People should also avoid visiting volcanoes or engaging in underground leisure activities. It’s also best to avoid overly-old buildings as their unstable foundations may result in a sudden collapse.

Lee Shing-Chak

What about the political sphere?

To answer that particular question, we should look to history for guidance. A full zodiac cycle – consisting of 12 zodiac animals and five elements – is 60 years long. Looking back six decades to 1959, this was the time when the US first opened its doors to China. Many economic ties were created during that period, although China was definitely under pressure and somewhat on the back foot when it came to trade negotiations. This type of trade uncertainty will be very much to the fore this year, with continuing friction with the US definitely on the horizon. Businesses should take some heart from the fact that not too much disruption is likely to come to pass.

Are there any zodiac signs that should think twice before having children this year?

I don’t think it’s possible to predict, outright, that certain people should not have children this year. Having said that, I think potential parents should be aware of specific personality conflicts that may arise between different zodiac animals. Generally speaking, Pigs are notoriously laidback, to the point of laziness. So if, for example, a Monkey has a child this year, the resulting parent-child personality combination may not be all that productive, as Monkeys tend to be more playful and active. Pigs are also known to be stubborn on occasion. So, if a potential parent is a Tiger – a sign for famous for meticulous planning – some clashes may be ahead as the parent and child may not see eye to eye on all things.

Is it true that those born in the year of a specific animal will have a ‘bad luck year’ when that sign comes around again? So, will 2019 really bring bad luck to those born in, say, 1983, 1971 or 1959?

Well, the answer is both yes and no. While it definitely is a ‘bad luck year’ for Pigs, not everyone born under the sign will experience a tumultuous year. For an accurate prediction, you need to know the exact month, date and year in which a person was born. In broader terms, the sign of the Pig is related to the element of water and also, a little more remotely, to wood. Therefore, if you were born in the spring or the winter, the negative potential is high indeed. If, on the other hand, you were born in autumn or, more particularly, during summer, then you will not be too adversely affected by any lingering bad luck.

Thank you.
