French Maze at Opera Gallery: A selection of artworks from French masters

For the first time ever in Hong Kong, works of 10 French artists made between 1949 and 2017 will be showcased under one roof, courtesy of Opera Gallery, Hong Kong. Always a pioneer in Hong Kong’s art scenario, Opera Gallery proudly presents French Maze, a selection of 27 artworks from French masters, ranging from the Post War period to contemporary times. Running from 17 May to 30 June 2018, the exhibition offers art connoisseurs a chance to turn the pages of art history, where French art plays a pivotal role in shaping European and world art scenes.

Figurative and abstract, these compositions form a collection of highly personal memories and ideas, interweaving the artists’ reflections and their artistic paths. Exploring different styles and mediums in the French art scene, French Maze will showcase works by Marc Chagall, Bernard Buffet, Jean Dubuffet and Mathieu Georges to the contemporary Andre Brasilier, Pierre Soulages, Chu The-Chun and Robert Combas, Andre’ Lanskoy and Haudressy Pascal.

Andre Brasilier’s work is typified by a breezy lyricism, wherein real-life subjects are transposed into dreamlike settings. Brasilier’s images portray a peaceful world, with delicate composition and colour harmonies bathed in soft, cool light. 

Marc Chagall’s world is dreamlike as well, with flying lovers, musicians, circus figures, flowers and animals – all intense personal symbols that combine in a complex tapestry of multiple narratives.

Jean Dubuffet – known for his idealistic approach to aesthetics – embraced the so-called ‘low art’ and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favour of what he believed was a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making.

Multimedia artist Natalie Wong collaborates with The Hive for first solo exhibition

Just in time for Hong Kong Arts Month, British Chinese mixed media artist Natalie Wong is set to open her first solo exhibition in partnership with arts venue The Hive Spring. Entitled “Neon Rap Portraits”, the series features glowing depictions of today’s biggest hip-hop stars the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z and Drake.

The Hong Kong twist to Wong’s artworks is her use of electroluminescent wire: a nod to the city’s iconic neon imagery. Wong also neatly links the ‘freestyle’ concept of her continuous line method to the essence of rap, saying “my lines are improvised in the moment, and it mirrors what a rapper does when he freestyles.” 

 

Wong when viral when pop culture giants Hypebeast and Missbich covered Neon Rap Portraits. Her pieces have since received enquiries from several international buyers. “There have also been multiple collectors interested in the same pieces which have resulted in a price increase in some of the work,” said Wong during the first week of release.

Wong’s traction among art buyers marks a departure from the traditional gallery route that many of the last generation’s artists had to struggle with in the early days of their careers. “Through the production of high quality digital content I have been able to reach buyers directly,” says Wong. “Galleries rarely take on new artists, so I have online channels to thank for the opportunity to showcase my work and reach a far wider audience.”

Wong says online exposure has allowed early-career artists like her to break into the market and build their own client lists.

Detour

The Nutcracker

Heart-to-Heart Yoga

It’s not every day that one gets to downward dog with the world’s oldest practitioner of yoga: 99-year-old Tao Porchon-Lynch. The World of Tintin

Budding illustrators and cartoon enthusiasts are in for a treat with the arrival of The World of Tintin exhibition at Quarry Bay. This unique collaboration between the HOCA Foundation and Musee Hergé is the largest ever showcase of Tintin artworks in Hong Kong. Three dioramic artworks have been specially created for the exhibition, modelled on scenes from the Tintin series. The scale of the exhibition is immense, with three pop-up shops around Hong Kong (ArtisTree, City Plaza and Central) presenting a variety of Tintin memorabilia.

Blue is the warmest colour: Vacheron Constantin’s exhibition reveals Hong Kong at dusk

 

World-renowned watchmaker, Vacheron Constantin, recently hosted the “An Invitation to Travel: Blue Hour, Hong Kong” Overseas Exhibition to celebrate its iconic Overseas watch collection.
French photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze scouted eight distinctive locations of Hong Kong and captured their unique beauty at the twilight hour of dusk. Whether it’s the illuminated skyline of the Victoria Harbour or the rural stilt houses of Tai O, the common destinations of the city reveal themselves in a new ‘blue’ light through Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze’s lenses. These photographs serve as a reference to Vacheron Constantin’s range of Overseas watches that are perfect for the modern jetsetter.
Be it the Overseas Chronograph for the gentlemen or the Overseas Small Model for the ladies, the watches perfectly complement both formalwear and casualwear, thanks to their interchangeable straps. Gieves & Hawkes’ recent flagship store launch attended by HK’s most stylish gentlemen

 

British menswear label Gieves & Hawkes recently opened its renovated flagship store at Harbour City with an exclusive cocktail party on 14 September.

Following the award-winning interior decoration of its Savile Row showroom, the Asia flagship store too is done up with signature smoked oak paneling, handmade details, iron work, soft lighting, etc., recreating the same intimate feel of its Savile Row counterpart.

The exclusive event was attended by Ji Jin-Hee who officiated the toasting ceremony with Nick Keyte, Wan Choe and other top management of Gieves & Hawkes. The event also attracted the most stylish gentlemen in town, including Eric Kwok, Derek Tsang, Alex Lam, Christopher Owen, Jake Astor, Max Johnson, Stanley Sun, Aric Chen, Jamie Lee, Dennis Wong, Derek Yeung and many more.

Revisiting 246 years of heritage, Gieves & Hawkes celebrates the evolution of British genteel fashion with an exhibition named “The Invention of The British Gentleman” to be held at Atrium I, Gateway Arcade, Harbour City, Hong Kong from 14 to 20 September 2017 between 10am and 10pm.

Gieves & Hawkes can justifiably take credit for the sartorial evolution of the British elite; after all, they have dressed ten generations of British royalty, right from King George III in 1803 to Princes William and Harry in recent times!
