The BoHo Show: Bohemian jewellery to complement your languid look

Way back in 1799, when a troupe of impoverished French artists were obliged to seek out an alternative, nomadic lifestyle in the wake of the bloody revolution that was raging across their home country, little did they know that they were set to spawn a very singular cultural movement, one that would never quite go out of fashion. Today, we know it as Bohemian style or “Bo ho” to those most au fait with its languid, laidback look.

Despite its 200-year-old status, it was the fine free thinkers of the 1960s and ’70s that truly bestowed upon Bohemianism its undoubted iconic status. Determined to distance themselves from the norms of society – rejecting its established institutions and its clothing conventions – these New Bohemians conjured up a whole new look for themselves, one characterized by loose-fitted silhouettes, hand-crafted jewellery and quirky colour combinations.

The notoriously free-spirited ladies of the time also gave full rein to their creativity, mixing and matching flowing, flowery outfits with accessories and jewels fashioned from everything from feathers to flowers. The ‘It’ girls of the day – including American actress Ali MacGraw and German model Anita Pallenberg – wholly embodied this style, happily embracing its easy-breezy look, complete with earthy earrings, beaded bracelets and faux-fur fripperies.

Indeed, it is mainly down to such colourfully-clad celebrities that the once-subversive Bohemian movement became more or less mainstream. By the early 2000s, such fashion icons as Kate Moss and Sienna Miller had wholly co-opted the look, while giving it a luxurious chic-chick makeover. Now, quite rightly sensing the way the winds of fashion are blowing, many haute joaillerie brands have come up with their own take on Bohemian jewellery as they set out to woo those who are equally liberal with their look as they are with their spending.

Look the Part: Top five accessories for women this fall

After giving tips to the dapper gentlemen about this season’s top five accessories, we turn our attention to the fairer sex. It’s time for the ladies to sit up and pay attention, because we reveal the five must-have accessories for women this fall.

Moomin Marvellous

The Moomins X Strathberry collection is the latest offering to come courtesy of Strathberry, the Scottish luxury luggage label. Produced in association with the Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson, every item in the range features one of the Moomins, the ever-popular fairy tale characters Jansson created back in 1945. The most famous of these – Moomintrol – can be found traipsing across the collection’s East/West and Mini Crescent bags, with a series of mini-Moomins emblazoned across the more compact leather purses and pouches.

Uncommon Scents

Carat Eau de Parfum, the latest fragrance from those fine folk at Cartier, is said to charmingly encapsulate the finest and freshest floral notes from a selection of nature’s most evocative nose-pleasers, including hints of violet, iris, hyacinth, ylang-ylang, daffodil, honeysuckle and tulip. Clearly designed to not only satisfy just one sense, the scent comes packaged in the kind of cut-glass finery more usually associated with the company’s high-end jewellery. A true visual and olfactory treat, it’s a must for the dressing tables of all the most modish.

Pyramid Selling

While pyramids will always first bring to mind the long-dead pharaohs of long-lost Egyptian dynasties, nuzzling into second place, in terms of three-dimensional triangle association, is surely Hermès, the Paris-headquartered high-end, high fashion brand. Not only were these pointy promontories a recurring motif in the marque’s truly memorable Fall/Winter 2018 collection, they are now the defining element of its newly-released and elegantly eye-catching Médor Rock collection of watches, with each model coming with a distinctly pyramidesque dial-mounted gem.

Amore in Store

With love always in the air among the most stylish and best-heeled, Bulgari, that most laudable of Italian luxury brands, is clearly looking to revive flickering flames of affection and to add a little added allure to any spontaneous outpourings of amore with its collection of limited-edition passion-themed handbags and heartfelt haute jewellery designs. So, if you want to declare your love with a Divas’ Dream pink gold necklace, Bulgari might well prove the middleman you’ve been looking for.

Gorgeous Grisogono

In a unique celebration of its 25-year history of eye-catching creativity, De Grisogono, the renowned Swiss luxury jeweller, has unveiled a commemorative collection of 25 stunning examples of bespoke, bejeweled innovation. Ably capturing a quarter-century of unpredictable affluence, the collection is awash with unexpected contrasts and finely-crafted counterpoints, not to mention astonishing stones, startling structures, artful aesthetics and, of course, the brand’s characteristic flair for the exceptional.

Go Big or Go Home: drop earrings are this seasons must-have

Go big or go home: drop earrings are this seasons must-have

While ear adornments are nothing new, when it comes to size, we’ve rather rapidly graduated from zero to XXL with statement drop earrings.

As the SS ready-to-wear catwalk shows are mothballed for another year, it’s clear that ethereal designs and delicate styling have given way to bold statement-making jewellery. Dominating the streets and runways alike, the abundance of shoulder-sweeping drop earrings has definitely – and deftly – brought a touch of glamour to the forefront.

Let’s be clear, we are not alluding to the kind of granny-style cumbersome danglers that could require ear lobe reconstruction, but to more contemporary ear candy of a style that is significantly more gravity-friendly and somewhat more stylish. From iconic gemstone chandeliers to large teardrop-shaped droplets, these eye-catching ear accessories are undoubtedly among this season’s recommended looks.

While at first, these somewhat presumptuous numbers may seem like a courageous choice, these drop earrings will add an extra dimension to your polished “power-look”. It is also one that such leading ladies as Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton are seldom seen without.

In light of such sisterly endorsement, could we not assume that, rather than being merely a fleeting fad, this particular look is more in keeping with the currently fierce political climate, which has driven women to reach for bold, overtly feminine cues?

One thing is for certain, when it comes to elegant ear-wear, it really is time to go big or go home. So, pull your hair into a chic chignon and allow your drop earrings to do the talking – bolder, stronger and more on trend than ever before.

Have you ever wondered why you naturally reach for those studs or statement earrings, day in and day out? Check our guide to what your favourite earrings say about you.

Diamond Daze: Stunning necklace unveiled by De GRISOGONO

Italian high jewellery atelier De GRISOGONO created some serious shockwaves when they unveiled the highly anticipated “The Art of De GRISOGONO” necklace at Christie’s Hong Kong.

Set in an elegant swirl of emeralds and diamonds, the necklace’s stunning centrepiece is a staggering 163.41-carat flawless D-colour emerald-cut white diamond.

Already gargantuan in size, the stone was cut down from a mind-bogglingly large 404.20-carat rough diamond mined by Nemesis International in Angola.

De GRISOGONO founder Fawaz Gruosi snuck in a second surprise reveal – an elegant diamond-studded black bracelet into which the large gem can also be socketed.

Gruosi shared, “In my entire 40 years in this business, I even imagined that I would have the chance to hold in my hand something so beyond beauty.”

The Art of De GRISOGONO necklace and bracelet are set to tour London, Dubai and New York before heading to Christie’s Geneva in November for auction. Keep your eyes peeled, there may be some records broken that day!

Take a walk on the wild side with these exotic jewels

Chopard_Animal_World_EN_72DPI_Page_156Some women are rabbits, others are goats and some are dogs – at least according to the Chinese Zodiac. But among their ranks are undoubtedly a number of bold women who can’t – or simply won’t – be tamed. For these types, it seems that wilder (rather than milder) animals would more aptly match their personas.

We can’t change our birth year, but we can channel the energy and spirit of whatever creature we’d like – a fact realised by many haute joaillerie labels that have designed alluring, animal-inspired pieces.

In an ode to the animal kingdom, Chopard has released its wondrous Animal World collection. Similarly, Swiss jeweller De Grisogono has released its own animal collection featuring snakes, dolphins, seals, panthers and peacocks. The white gold set of peacock earrings is beautifully detailed and set with emeralds, sapphires, and white and yellow diamonds. For a different flight of fancy, Nirav Modi offers up a stretchable flamingo-inspired bangle bracelet. Its eye-catching ‘feathers’ get their vivid colour from pink sapphires and white diamonds.

For those who want to unleash their inner Cat Woman, brands such as Cartier, Chanel and Piaget all have something to offer. One standout piece is a lion-inspired necklace from Piaget’s Secret and Lights collection. The 18-carat white gold necklace is set with brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, and stares back at you with onyx eyes. Its creation was inspired by the famous winged lion sculpture in Venice’s St Mark’s Square. Whether one identifies as a ferocious feline, bedazzling bird or salacious snake is a matter of taste. Whatever your choice, though, with these pieces you are bound to become the bejewelled queen of the animal kingdom.
