COVID-19 vaccine for 5 to 11 year old kids will be available soon!

Children have rarely suffered a serious blow from COVID-19 but a jab for school going children would be a huge step towards normalcy, cutting down on severe cases of illness and ensuring a regular academic year. And in a highly anticipated announcement, data from BioNTech clinical trials published on Monday shows that a lower dose of the COVID-19 vaccine – roughly one-third the amount given to adults and teens — is safe and effective in cutting down COVID-19 infection in children as young as five.

The positive news from Pfizer-BioNtech research coincides with clinical trials being simultaneously conducted by Sinopharm’s Beijing Institute of Biological Products which found that its two-dose shot, BBIBP-CorV, widely used in China’s immunization program, triggers a “robust immune response” in children as little as three to 17.

The news comes at a time when the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 has spread to three coastal cities in China – Putian, Xiamen, Quanzhou – putting nearly 50 school going children in isolation, a safe and effective vaccine for the younger age group was the need of the hour. Scroll below for all the details:

Clinical trials – BioNTech Vaccine

BioNtech conducted the research on 2,268 participants aged five to 11 and gave them two doses of the vaccine, three weeks apart. A 10-microgram dose was selected for children – that’s one-third of the 30-microgram dose given to teens and adults.

The 10 microgram dose was carefully selected as the preferred dose for safety, tolerability and immunogenicity in children 5 to 11 years of age – Pfixer-BioNTech in a press statement.

A high level of antibodies after the vaccination determines the efficacy of the jab. Blood work post the trial revealed a “strong immune response in this cohort of children one month after the second dose”, according to the pharma company spokesperson. Complete data of the clinical trial will need to be submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration for peer review and scrutinized by regulators for approvals, the process is expected to be completed by the end of September and if everything is on track, vaccines for this age group might be available for use by Halloween.

The vaccine will have to meet the highest standards of safety before it gets the final clearance from the US FDA and World Health Organisation. A Pfizer-BioNTech spokesperson said that there were no instances of myocarditis, a type of heart inflammation linked with mRNA vaccines, in the trial but clinically 1 in 5,000 teenage boys run the risk of critical side effects of heart muscle inflammation after the shot. The company will now start clinical trials on children as young as 6 months “as soon as the fourth quarter of this year.”

Clinical trials – Sinopharm’s Vaccine

Sinopharm’s vaccine is the first China-made jab to get approval by the World Health Organisation in May 2021. Unlike the BioNTech vaccine which uses the mRNA technology, Sinopharm’s BBIBP-CorV uses inactivated viruses and carries a 79% efficacy rate in third phase clinical trials. According to the Ministry of Education in China, a billion doses of it have already been administered till date in the adult and teen population, including 91% of the 12 to 17 year olds who have already taken the jab without any known side-effects.

The Sinopharm trial enrolled 288 children in phase one and 720 children in phase two in the Henan province. Phase three research is ongoing in the United Arab Emirates, where children as young as three are enlisted in the study. Till date, critical reactions were not observed except for one in a child with known food allergies, other side-effects have been “mostly mild to moderate”. The vaccine has been approved on an emergency basis for use on children age three to 17 in China, though immunizations have been focused on 12 and above.

In an encouraging development, the Chilean government has independently approved the use of another China-made jab, the Sinovac vaccine, for use on children above the age of six. Previously, only the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine had obtained approval in Chile for use on 12 to 17 years old.

Data of Sinopharm’s clinical trials has been published in prestigious medical journal, The Lancet

Hong Kong travel rules for the vaccinated

Staycations and glamping under the stars are all cool but if there’s a chance at the real deal – board a plane, jet set to a fancy destination or just relive the holidays of the past – will you not jump at the opportunity?

From Mauritius, Switzerland to Portugal – several countries have opened their borders to inoculated Hong Kongers, albeit with stipulations. Prepare your passport and vaccination record, and if a Group B or a Group C country is on your travel radar, quarantine time could be slashed to just seven days. Here are the rules:

Countries which qualify for a shortened quarantine

Starting from June 30, fully vaccinated Hong Kongers who arrive from Group B (high-risk), C (medium-risk) countries and Taiwan, will be allowed to quarantine in a designated hotel for seven days if they present:

  1. Negative COVID-19 test upon arrival, carried out in less than 72 hours prior to boarding, and
  2. Positive antibody test from a recognised laboratory carried out in Hong Kong in the last three months

Fully vaccinated passengers from Group D – Australia and New Zealand – can make use of the seven day isolation period without the need of an antibody test.

Group B includes, Japan, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam, United States amongst others and Group C are all other countries except China which are not in Groups A1, A2, B or Group D. Australia and New Zealand are the only Group D places.

On top of the above requirements, passengers will have to undergo two COVID-19 tests during their quarantine period, and a further three tests on the 12th, 16th and 19th day thereafter.

Countries which are open to double vaxxed Hong Kongers

 1. Switzerland

Carry COVID-19 vaccination records, proof of negative nucleic acid test and sign an entry form before arrival  and you’re all set to enjoy the Alpine villages and the most unreal nature backdrops. Check the latest rules before landing but as of now, there is no quarantine requirement for vaccinated Hong Kongers.

2. Mauritius

Fully vaccinated Hong Kongers can make the most of water villas at this breezy getaway with a negative PCR test at the airport and proof of vaccination. Till the end of September, this island paradise allows travellers to book a ‘hotel holiday’ where they can use all the hotel amenities and relax on the beach for a period of two weeks. If time and budget permits you to stay more than a fortnight, you’re free to roam on this island paradise. Rules for vaccinated passengers will relax further from October so keep a tab at their official website

3. Germany

Germany recognizes vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency which includes Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna. If you fulfil this criteria then complete the digital entry registration, undergo mandatory testing or provide an antibody test as a proof of immunity to enjoy a quarantine-free holiday here. Read updated details here

4. Spain

Spain was in one of Europe’s strictest lockdowns in the spring of 2020. Battered in both the number of infections and casualties, the country bounced back for the summer of 2020 but again entered a strict lockdown from November 2020 to May 2021. The restrictions have now eased and as of June 7, fully vaccinated travellers can enter this laidback country with just the proof of vaccination and other details registered on the Spain Travel Health website

5. USA

Travel to America is a bit tricky to navigate. At the moment, vaccinated individuals are allowed to land in the country and roam around without quarantine but restrictions can vary from state-to-state. By and large, Hong Kong is on the ‘safest level’ of COVID-hit countries in the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list.

 6. Belize

This tiny Central American country has the most stunning Mayan ruins, turquoise waters and diverse coral reef’s. Carry a proof of negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 96 hours of travel and proof of vaccination completed at least two weeks prior to travel to soak in the lush landscape. Complete the Belize Health App within 72 hours upon arrival. Further details can be explored here

7. Greece

One of the most popular holiday destinations, Greece is welcoming double vaxxed travellers with a negative PCR test but COVID-19 cases there are on the rise. At the time of publishing the story, more than 2,600 positive cases were recorded in a single day and several countries have raised red flags for travel to this country. If Greece is still on your itinerary, fill up the Passenger Locator Form before arrival.

8. Thailand

Thailand has the same travel requirements as most countries but keep a tab on the news before booking your stay here. Even though travel is open, the country is battling its worst COVID-19 wave since January 2020. Infections and deaths are both on the rise and unless travel to this island nation is absolutely essential, we’d say, avoid.

9. Georgia

Fully vaccinated travellers have zero restrictions before travelling to Georgia and no quarantine requirement on landing. Even though Hong Kong government does not have travel warnings in place, given the recent spate of COVID-19 cases here, the US CDC recommends avoiding all unnecessary travel to this beautiful Caucasin country.

10. Seychelles

Currently this gorgeous island nation has no quarantine or travel restrictions for vaccinated travellers. The vaccination rate in the local population has been as high as 71%, clearly they’ve reached the herd-immunity threshold for COVID infections.

A guide to post-Covid-19 vaccination do’s and don’ts

After more than a year long of social distancing and travel restrictions, Hongkongers can finally be more at ease now that Covid-19 vaccinations have been made accessible city-wide. However, whether you have taken your second dose or are still waiting on your first, there are certain precautions that are worth noting post-vaccination. Here are a few of the questions regarding what you can do and are advised not to do.

Do I need to wear a mask?
Although getting vaccinated reduces the risk of virus transmission, it still takes two weeks to build up a resistance and you have to be fully vaccinated (two doses). Even then, it is not certain how much the vaccine reduces transmission. So, wearing a mask in public spaces, and continuing risk-reduction measures like washing hands regularly and social distancing in crowded spaces are still advisable.

Can I throw / attend a party?
Gatherings among friends and family are much safer if every individual in the group has been fully vaccinated. In a recent press conference, it was announced that dine-in restrictions for groups will be relaxed if every member of the group and staff are fully vaccinated.

Can I visit my elderly parents?
The months-long visiting restrictions imposed on visitors at elderly homes saw an unfortunate rise in mental health problems and a ‘loneliness epidemic’. Thankfully, it was recently announced that fully vaccinated persons will be able to visit their families in elderly homes and hospitals again.

Can I visit families with children?
Although children of ages 16 and below are not advised to be vaccinated, as long as a person is fully vaccinated and are limiting gatherings to small groups, the risk of virus transmission is reduced and is generally safer.

Can I travel out of Hong Kong?
Restrictions on travel in the near future could include quarantine-free travel bubbles for fully vaccinated persons. However, as it stands in the meantime, persons arriving in Hong Kong still have to quarantine at a hotel for three weeks.

In the case of China, travelling across the boarder will need strong reason and documentation, though taking a vaccine made in China will increase your chances of approval.

Will I be immune to other variants of Covid-19 mutations?
A number of countries including United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa have reported mutated strains of the Covid-19 virus which has prompted the local government to consider its next steps in procuring a new generation of vaccines that will better protect the public from Covid-19 mutations, according to Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan.

Despite a turbulent 2020, the past 12 months have still yielded moments of positivity

NEW HEROES HAVE EMERGED, LED BY HEALTH WORKERS

Frontline doctors, nurses and other health workers, especially those who perished while battling Covid-19, have been hailed as modern-day heroes as they courageously defied fears and risks to their personal health so others would live. Despite the continuing pall of gloom cast by the global pandemic, frontline doctors and other health workers raise hopes and inspiration as they press on in their battle against an unseen lethal enemy.

FAMILY BONDING RECEIVED A HUGE BOOST

During normal times, senior executives and entrepreneurs often spend long hours at work to run their businesses, often at the expense of family time. This phenomenon is by no means unique in Hong Kong, but thankfully, the pandemic has ushered in a new normal, with these elite businesspeople now consigned to working at home. In the process, they’re getting to spend more quality time with family members, which goes a very long way in bolstering family bonding and relationships.

MUSIC CONCERTS GOT MORE CREATIVE AND ACCESSIBLE

Undeterred by bans on huge music concerts due to Covid-19-related social distancing, scores of the world’s famous entertainers and other celebrities, including Elton John, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Paul McCartney, banded together for a huge online charity concert, One World: Together at Home, on April 18 that was globally televised and shown live on ABC, NBC, ViacomCBS Networks, iHeartMedia, Bell Media networks and online platforms in Canada. It was held to celebrate and support healthcare workers, as well as feature real-life experiences of doctors, nurses and families around the world. Shortly thereafter, Lady Gaga released a new album online, which features a selection of upbeat songs, while Demi Lovato reprised her Grammy performance, followed by a flawless delivery of the national anthem at the Super Bowl. In a heart-warming twist, musicians serenaded a quiet, leafy audience of nearly 2,300 house plants as the Liceu opera house in Barcelona, Spain reopened its doors on June 22. Proceeds from the performance were later donated to charity.

READING WAS RE-DISCOVERED

Left with no choice but to stay home for extended periods of time, many have re-discovered their passion for reading, be it  the old-fashioned way with a hardcopy of a best-seller or digitally through the use of a Kindle or some other handy tablet.

BAKING, GARDENING AND OTHER DOMESTIC CHORES TOOK OFF

Staying home with little or no physical activities is bound to hit the waistline as the temptation to overeat becomes irresistible. In this regard, baking curiously emerged as boon and bane since a wide array of muffins, cookies, baked pastas and other baked dishes often enticed everyone in the household to consume extra calories more than their usual intakes. Gardening, spring cleaning and a few other chores, though, helped maintain the balance thanks to their physical exertions. In all, many families used the enforced home lockdowns to turn their hand at tasks long left undone.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE… BIG COMPANIES BOLSTERED THEIR CSR (CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY)

Criticised periodically for amassing huge profits but not giving back enough to the communities where they operate and serve, certain large corporations took pro-active measures to help those in great need amid the pandemic. Some cases in point were Apple and 3M, which pooled their resources or tinkered with their operations to produce millions of face masks to help keep people safe from the continuing spread of Covid-19. Other American companies, notably Ford, General Motors, Tesla and other automakers, also ventured into areas where they have not tread before, particularly through production of ventilators and other medical devices to help save lives of those stricken with the lethal pandemic. Alcoholic drinks producers in different countries also pitched in and re-calibrated portions of their businesses to produce hand sanitisers.

TIK TOK TURNED SCORES INTO INSTANT ENTERTAINERS

With more personal time on their hands than ever before, a surge of would-be entertainers took to short video apps like Tik Tok to try pass the days. Before Tik Tok was banned in Hong Kong, Indonesia, India and in several other countries, the short video app became extremely popular and its use exploded across the world as it enabled users to create and share lots of fun and entertaining videos which often featured their creators as principal performers. From adorable pet videos to dancing shows, vocal performances and more, they gifted the world with an entirely new stream of fun.

THANKS TO ZOOM, PARTIES AND MANY OTHER FESTIVITIES ARE STILL ON

Milestone events, including birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, conferences, trade exhibitions and many others went online during the enforced Covid-19 social distancing, thanks to Zoom and other video conference apps. With gatherings banned, the need for a communal space prompted organisers to come up with new ways of bringing people together. Video conferencing tools emerged as a convenient solution, with Zoom one of the major beneficiaries. Today, it’s not uncommon to find families – particularly those who are spread across borders – to utilise this innovative method to connect with their loved ones.

Bright Spots Moments of positivity in 2020 viral romance

THOUGH VIRAL, ROMANCE CONTINUES TO BLOOM AND PROSPER

Romance is often impatient, and some separated lovers simply can’t wait for a Covid-19 vaccine to get approved for mass use. Great affection almost always inspires and fuels innovations and creativity, and this explains the use of drones in various places to deliver fresh flowers and other goodies to a loved one. No more candle-lit, intimate dinners? Hardly a problem. Online romantic dinners are not uncommon – with promises of a return to lovely evenings together in person when normalcy returns.

Bright Spots Moments of positivity in 2020 carbon dioxide emissions fall

CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS FELL SIGNIFICANTLY ACROSS THE WORLD AS FOSSIL FUEL ENERGY CONSUMPTION FELL STEEPLY

An unprecedented reduction in carbon dioxide emissions was recorded across the world during the first half of 2020, much larger than the level during the 2008 financial crisis, 1979 oil crisis and even World War II, as fossilised fuel use plunged amid Covid-19 lockdowns and curtailed travel across the globe. During the period, emissions were slashed by 1,551 million tonnes or 8.8 percent compared to the first half in 2019, according to a study by an international research team, led by Zhu Liu from the Department of Earth System Science at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The plummeting levels of global pollution has even reversed the effects of climate change in some countries, promoting several species of wildlife to return to once-abandoned habitats, such as pink dolphins in Hong Kong harbour and pink flamingos in Mumbai. While Covid-19 has left its indelible mark, it’s clear 2020 still found reason for good cheer.
