The Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations has justifiably gained a reputation as one of the best synchronised and spectacular fireworks displays anywhere in the world. With the pyrotechnics released from barges in the centre of the harbour, the best views can be gleaned from waterfront vantage points spanning Central to Causeway Bay and over in Tsim Sha Tsui. Some hotels and restaurants, the Observation Wheel and even up on the Peak also offer excellent vistas.

Spring Time – Stylistic Watches are a Motif for all the 365 Days

Just as the embrace of Chinese culture has become one of the fastest-growing phenomena of the 21st century, so too has the Chinese New Year – or the Spring Festival – established itself as an event of truly international proportions. Typically honoured in all of the largest cities around the world, citizens of every nationality now look forward to processions, street dances, and all the paraphernalia traditionally associated with the most important date on the Chinese calendar.

Inevitably, this has not been lost on many of the world’s biggest brands, companies never known to miss out on a commercial opportunity. In particular, luxury precision watchmakers – ever mindful of the value of the Chinese and Hong Kong markets – have celebrated this Rabbit Year with custom limited edition timepieces.

Harry Winston Emerald

Boasting octagonal-shaped cases, the Harry Winston Emerald watch collection features cases crafted in 18-karat white or rose gold. The 18mm models also boast a diamond-set bezel as a nod to the house’s “King of Diamonds” legacy. Available in mother-of-pearl, the dial is crowned with rubies in the form of an emerald cut. The standout from this collection comes with a red, classic alligator leather strap, which is a straight-out nod to traditional CNY festivities.

In celebration of 2023 being the Rabbit Year, IWC Schaffhausen has unveiled its Portugieser Automatic 40 Edition “Chinese New Year”. Housed in an ergonomic 40-millimetre stainless-steel case and featuring a striking burgundy dial and gold-plated hands and applique, a particular highlight is hidden at the back of the watch – the automatic winding mechanism’s gold-plated oscillating weight in the form of a rabbit.

Memorigin Zodiac Series

The Hong Kong tourbillon brand Memorigin, meanwhile, is honouring its long-term commitment to promoting Chinese traditions through the launch of its Memorigin Zodiac Series. The periphery of the dial is designed in an auspicious fret pattern, while the indices are represented by rubies or blue sapphires. The watch is equipped with a manual-winding tourbillon movement that consists of 155 pieces of subassembly module and 18 jewels. In all, it has 40 hours of power reserve and a vibration frequency of 28,800 oscillations per hour.

OMEGA Constellation Aventurine

Turning now to the OMEGA Constellation Aventurine, this features dials fashioned from natural Aventurine stone, meaning no two dials are ever alike, with options to choose bezels paved with diamonds or engraved with Roman numerals. The watch also features diamond-set bezels and skeletonised hour and minute hands, as well as dial-matching leather straps in red.

Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Xiali Calendar

For its part, Parmigiani Fleurier has gone full-on Chinese with the launch of its Tonda PF Xiali Calendar, with its offer of a precision take on the Chinese calendar over the long haul said to be a world first. In order to deliver on this, the watch conceals an extremely sophisticated mechanism within an all-new movement – the Calibre PF008 – which facilitates the display of classical Chinese characters. As the Chinese calendar is not cyclical, the complication is mechanically programmed and extends across 12 years via an intricate cam system.

For its part, TUDOR has debuted new versions of its Black Bay line in steel and yellow gold with a fixed bezel. These Black Bay 31, 36, 39 and 41 S&G models, as they are known, proffer a unique aesthetic with their T-curved cases intermittently highlighted with polished yellow gold sections. Fitted with Manufacture Calibres, including reference MT5201, one of the marque’s new family of movements, these models are said to be at the very cutting edge of technical watchmaking refinement.

Vacheron Constantin Metiers d’Art – The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac

Rounding off this month’s selection, Vacheron Constantin is looking to boost its appeal to the mainland and Hong Kong Haute horology aficionados and collectors by offering a customised rabbit-motif limited edition of its Métiers d’Art – The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac range for the Rabbit Year. The iconic representations appear on the dials and have to be etched directly into the metal, with the pattern remaining semi-embedded while standing out from its gold base thanks to a subtle array of accentuating reliefs designed to create an engaging depth effect.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022

A prosperous year is in the stars – though some animals are likely to prosper more than others. Generally, though, the Year of the Tiger is billed to be an auspicious one, setting an even playing field for all 12 Chinese zodiac signs. Yet, as the balance of energies between yin and yang shifts, unpredictable and often challenging circumstances will arise in the wake of a changing landscape.

The year ahead will find finances, romance and health in flux, but those who are cautious in their investments and choose their friends wisely will be better positioned to profit down the line. If you have the patience and resilience to weather the rocky road ahead, the later months will bring monetary reward and, yes, luck in love.
Here’s what’s on the slate for each animal sign of the Chinese zodiac…

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - tiger

Tiger
1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022
Since it’s the Year of the Tiger, the self-confident, competitive feline will be in conflict with Tai Sui, the Guardian God of the Year, meaning major life changes are expected for those born under the sign. If marriage and children were not on the cards last year, 2022 may bring a proposal – or a break up. But the fierce feline has also been blessed by the powerful relationship star, which offers hope to singletons looking to settle down. Issues may also arise over health and finances; be cautious, Tigers, when you decide to travel or invest.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - rabbit

Rabbit
1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011
Under the star of temporary relationships, those born in the zodiac sign of the Rabbit are likely to enjoy a sudden shift in positive attention from colleagues and superiors. This may enable these gentle, skilful creatures to work more efficiently, boosting their career prospects or business ventures to immediate reward. But Rabbits should be wary of temptations this year. Their increased popularity and positive influence on those around them could elevate their luck in love – or it might backfire. Avoid any potential messy situation as a possible love triangle will only end messily.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - dragon

Dragon
1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012
Dragons are in a distant union with the year’s guardian god, implying that fortune will appear in the form of aid or support from afar. There’s a good chance that foreign investments and international partnerships will prosper. Business travel is likely to result in a successful deal, but hard work will be required before any discernible pay off. Dragons shouldn’t be afraid of asserting themselves to control their destiny this year – which is no huge leap for these intelligent, ambitious creatures.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - snake

Snake
1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013
While Snakes enjoyed seamless social interaction last year, the tide has now turned and they are likely to be plagued by gossip and trivial disputes. Although career and finances will not be heavily affected by this negative energy, if small matters are not settled promptly, they may become weighty and troublesome, affecting mood, temperament, memory and relationships. The insightful Snake might find it helpful to cut back on outside entertainment and spend quality time with family and those who’ve always had their back.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - horse

Horse
1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014
Horses are in harmony with the guardian god of the year, affording them greater stability and improved relationships at work and home. Reaping the benefits of a helpful support system, these active, energetic animals should be able to ascend their respective social and career ladders, thus expanding their inner circle and boosting their reputation. However, success may also spawn jealousy and petty disputes. Don’t be blindsided; stay competitive yet humble so you can canter smoothly through the year.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - goat

Goat
1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015
2021 was a turbulent year for the shy, amicable Goat, but their luck is about to turn. A change in relationship, career and / or living environment will provide a more comfortable building block. New partners, children and homes will be sources of joy, while a profitable return affords a surer footing. So, if you have been putting off that large, indulgent purchase, this year would be the best time to treat yourself, though bear in mind that the larger the sum, the heavier the bill.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - monkey

Monkey
1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016
Last year the witty, adventurous Monkey was blessed by the relationship star, but now a shift in fortune may prompt a proposal, pregnancy or even a break-up. For the uncommitted, this is the year to discuss long-term matters like marriage or children. While this instability may have Monkeys scrambling for solutions, they are advised to pace themselves lest they make decisions they live to regret. Outside such matters of the heart, though, the lucky stars are aligned with their sign; big problems should get smaller, and small problems disappear.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - rooster

Rooster
1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017
2021 was an exciting year for the talented Rooster. But come 2022, their happy rollercoaster of life will slow down, perhaps too much so. They might experience a sudden dip in motivation and energy as they hit a career bump, or their personal or relationship goals stagnate. While these resourceful, courageous creatures are often itching for change, they are advised to proceed with caution and consider each decision carefully, since it could determine their fortune for the rest of the year.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - dog

Dog
1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018
More money, more time and more capital – Dogs are blessed with abundance and prosperity in 2022, although personal circumstances and health issues may tell a different story. These loyal, prudent creatures are advised to avoid gossip and adopt a healthier diet to stay lucky and energetic. Business affairs abroad may also reap rewards, while local opportunities wane. Stay connected to the latest trends in order to build stronger professional relationships; there is no limit to Dogs learning new tricks this year.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - pig

Pig
1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019
The diligent, amiable Pig is fortunately in sync with the guardian god of 2022, meaning they are less likely to face major upheaval in their romantic, career or home life. They may bask in the glow of this auspicious energy for the next couple of years, thanks to their habit of sticking to routine, especially when confronted by unexpected events. While it’s best to avoid changing jobs now – the economy may not improve until the second half of the year – push for that promotion you’ve been eyeing, or strengthen your existing network to boost the chance of your lucky star turning mishap into marvel.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - rat

Rat
1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020
Rats will find it harder to get along with others as they undergo a major upheaval, either in terms of living space – it is said to be an auspicious year for Rats to move house – or travelling to a new place. Though they are likely to be on unstable ground for the first few months of the year, there will be no significant downturns in their situation. Liberated by the change in scenery, these quick-witted, versatile souls are advised to learn a new skill and hone it – before further shifts befall them towards the end of the year.

Your fate this Year of the Tiger 2022 chinese zodiac predictions gafencu - ox

Ox
1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021
Love is in the air for Oxen this year. The relationship star is shining over them, boosting interpersonal liaisons. Good fortune and abundance hover on the horizon as well; all these dependable, decisive animals must do is push past the mishaps and misfortunes lingering from last year. With the way then clear for luck to work its magic, the Ox will be led to bigger and better wins in their personal and professional lives.

Toast to the new Year of the Tiger with the opulent Louis XIII

Ring in the Lunar New Year with a toast to welcome the 2022 Year of the Tiger. Serving as a symbol of  wealth and happiness, what better way to raise your glass in celebration of a new beginning with close friends and family than with a luxurious imbibe, by the venerable Louis XIII.

Toast to the new Year of the Tiger LOUIS XIII Lifestyle wine Out of the Frame_Gafencu_9

Unparalleled in skill, knowledge and quality, the celebrated cognac maker puts out a sumptuous and deliciously tantalising cognac — a testament of the brand’s more than 140 years of experience in the mastery of producing one of the world’s most desirable and sought-after imbibes.

Toast to the new Year of the Tiger LOUIS XIII Lifestyle wine Out of the Frame_Gafencu_14

However, Louis XIII’s undeniably indelible flavours don’t come without the painstaking crafting process of each of its cognac. The distillery, since Louis XIII’s inception in 1874, have had generations of wine cellar experts curate a staggering array of eau de vie made from grapes grown in France’s Grande Champagne region.

Toast to the new Year of the Tiger LOUIS XIII Lifestyle wine Out of the Frame_Gafencu_8

These experts select from over 1, 200 different eau de vie – some younger, while some date back centuries – to create a harmonious blend of rich flavours. Over 250 disparate aromas are incorporated together, resulting in a vivid freshness of passion fruit and spice of ginger to rich notes of candied plumbs; giving the tipple its common comparison to drinking a sumptuous sip of perfume.

Even while the focus of carefully distilling decadent cognacs, equal attention is paid to the bottling process as well, ensuring the finished product is fit for the eponymous French king the brand takes its name from. As such, each bottle is lovingly handcrafted by artisans of one of two French royal crystal workshops – Baccarat or Saint Louis – transforming the containers into glorious works of art fit to present as the perfect gift for the Lunar New Year.

Roar into the Year of the Tiger with these luxury timepieces

As the Ox gives way to the Tiger, the world’s leading haute-horology houses are celebrating with an array of timepieces that pay tribute to the striped feline in question. Scroll below for seven stunning examples that merit particular mention.

Harry Winston’s Premier Chinese New Year Automatic 36mm

First up is the whimsical, gem-studded Premier Chinese New Year Automatic 36mm from renowned American jeweller Harry Winston. Featuring 57 twinkling diamonds on its bezel, lug tips and crown, its appropriately red-hued dial is fronted by two adorable tiger cubs with bejewelled eyes, red beaded mother-of-pearl stripes and peony ‘tattoos’. Visible through the rose-gold caseback is the automatic movement that develops a robust 68-hour power reserve, while a chic red leather strap completes its festive appeal.

IWC’s Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Chinese New Year”

Another timepiece utilising the Chinese colour of good luck, happiness and success is IWC’s Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Chinese New Year”. Here, the striking burgundy dial – replete with hours, minutes and seconds displays and day and date apertures – is lovingly enveloped in a 41mm stainless-steel case. Underneath the hood is the in-house 69385 calibre movement and a specially-designed tiger-shaped rotor, all viewable through the transparent sapphire-crystal caseback.

Breguet’s 7145 Classique Year of the Tiger

For its part, Breguet unveils the 7145 Classique Year of the Tiger, whose fascia is adorned with a majestic tiger vividly brought to life through an intricate combination of bas-relief engraving and the brand’s iconic guilloché work. Adding to its super-slim sophistication, the 40mm rose-gold case boasts a depth of less than 5.5mm – a feat made possible by the ultra-thin, self-winding calibre 502.3 movement within. Just eight creations of this homage to fine artisanal watchmaking will be released.

Piaget’s Altiplano Year of the Tiger

A similarly slim CNY-inspired design comes courtesy of Piaget, with the dial of its 38-piece limited-edition Altiplano Year of the Tiger also dominated by the fearless feline. In this instance, however, it is the arts of cloisonné and grand feu enamel that enable the creature to pop out from the shimmering white mother-of-pearl dial. Ribbons of gold are painstakingly used to create each miniature portion of the tiger’s body before enamel pigment is added in an effect that heightens its lifelike vivacity. In a further statement of elegant embellishment, brilliant-cut diamonds ring the white-gold case.

Not to be outdone, Ulysse Nardin’s Classico Tiger relies on not one but two separate enamelling techniques to capture the essence of the eponymous giant cat, which is envisaged ready to pounce under a dramatic midnight-blue sky. The first – champlevé – involves creating recesses that are then filled with enamel, while the second, termed paillonné, utilises tiny slivers of gold or silver leaf coated with translucent enamel to create a shimmering metallic effect. After hours upon hours of labour-intensive craftsmanship, each of the 88 pieces of this model is unique.

Chopard’s L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Tiger

Turning to the ancient Japanese art of urushi lacquering, meanwhile, is Chopard’s L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Tiger. Powered by the L.U.C 96.17-L movement and crafted from 18K ethical rose gold, this 88-piece limited release depicts a tiger looking back towards a mountainous landscape. It’s an artistic image that is created through a months-long process of applying the sap of urushi trees (also known as lacquer trees) and tempering them into a hard consistency.

Vacheron Constantin’s Legend of the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Tiger

The final stop on our journey through the year’s outstanding Chinese Zodiac-inspired timepieces is Vacheron Constantin’s Legend of the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Tiger. Available in platinum with a blue dial or in rose gold with a brown dial (with 12 of each set to be released), just four apertures are visible on its 40mm fascia, displaying the hours, minutes, day and date. The rest of its expansive dial, meanwhile, is aptly dedicated to the Zodiac emblem of the year – a meticulously engraved prowling tiger whose eyes are firmly on its wearer.

Jee Whizz: Chef Siu makes Ying Jee Club a prime seasonal destination…

With the Chinese New Year celebrations coming to a close, restaurants and businesses across the city are preparing to reopen following a hectic festive celebration. One particular Michelin-starred restaurant, however, kept their doors open to usher in the new lunar year, serving traditional Lunar New Year features that are not only delicious but also brimming with symbolism and auspicious significance.

gafencu magazine Jee Whizz The culinary genius of Chef Siu makes Ying Jee Club a prime seasonal destination Executive Chef - Chef Siu Hin Chi

Ying Jee Club, the Cantonese fine-dining establishment set in Central’s Nexxus Building, is helmed by Executive Chef Siu Hin Chi – who previously helped ensure another high-end cuisinery, T’ang Court, achieved two Michelin-star status, brought home a second star for Duddell’s in 2015 and even helped this particular eatery secure its first star just four months after it opened – the restaurant’s beloved menu was enhanced with a special Lunar New Year spread for the period between 12-18 February.

Summing up the dishes that comprised the exclusive menu, Chef Siu says: “The food we’ll be serving for the holiday majors on iconic festive flavours, further heightened by the finest ingredients. What’s more, each course had been specially renamed to signify good luck and fortune, all in the hope of bestowing blessings on our diners.”

As part of our own tasting menu, we sampled five of the menu’s star turns, beginning with a bowl of Imperial Bird’s Nest Broth with Fish Maw, Conpoy and Chicken. Comfort food at its very finest, the hearty chicken broth was enhanced with complementing textures of gelatinous bird’s nest and crunchy fish maw, while the conpoy bequeathed a deliciously oceanic tinge to proceedings. Subtle yet palate-pleasing, the various ingredients blended together in a wholesome and wholly satisfying manner.

Next up was the Crispy Suckling Pig with Goose Liver Pate and Wok-fried Prawn with Salted Egg Yolk, the Chinese name of which equates to wishing diners a prosperous, gold-enriched home. All in all, the yolk-battered prawns were beautifully golden-hued – symbolising wealth and prosperity – and packed a major umami punch, while the crispy skin of the suckling pig was enhanced with the unusual addition of a small steamed bun and a layer of opulent pâté. Undeniably a feast for the eyes, this delicious dish blended two of Cantonese cuisine’s best-loved appetisers in a sinfully rich fashion.

Another appetiser, Braised Mushroom with Shrimp Paste, Scallop and Crab Roe, then made its much-anticipated entrance. Here, the subtle taste of scallop and prawn enhanced the meaty, umami-laden flavours of the mushroom, with the crab roe imparting an added textural dimension. The glistening jade-hued – yet another lucky Chinese New Year colour – bakchoy was a welcome addition, adding a refreshing component to the plate.

Clearly keen to turn the luxury factor up several notches, Chef Siu further enticed our appetite with a heaped plate of Braised South Africa Abalone with Roasted Duck, Black Mushroom and Yunnan Ham. The generously portioned serving of abalone – that most coveted of edible molluscs – was braised in the requisite sauce prior to being sat atop a bed of thinly-sliced roasted duck and mushrooms. Guaranteed to appeal to festive-minded local diners, slivers of Yunnan ham imparted a sharp saltiness to this otherwise subtly nuanced concoction.

The star of the show, though, was undeniably the Sautéed Lobster with Water Chestnut and Crispy Conpoy. Yet another study in how to perfectly balance flavours and textures, the sweet, crunchy water chestnuts and crispy conpoy shavings served to enhance each succulent morsel of lobster, while tantalising the taste buds with rich oceanic accents. As with preceding courses, this shellfish-led dish highlighted Chef Siu’s innate understanding of how to create a delicate equilibrium between the high-quality ingredients he chooses, with each contributing to the epicurean harmony that will leave patrons of Ying Jee Club yearning for more beyond the Chinese New Year festivities.
