The charitable body, New Wine Ministries Hong Kong, hosted a special “Sing for Joy” Charity Dinner in October 29, at the Aberdeen Marina Club. Through a raffle lottery and silent auction, generous guests raised a substantial sum for two of its worthy causes, namely asylum seekers, refugees, and cancer patients.

Negroni Week 2022: Where to find the best Negroni in Hong Kong
Red, bold and punchy. Negroni is an iconic Italian classic cocktail, typically mixed with gin, vermouth and Campari. Though it is an acquired taste for many because of its bitterness, it is an aperitif that is loved by many. So much so that every year, our favourite bars in Hong Kong celebrate the classic tipple and participate in Negroni Week, a global charity initiative to raise funds for any charity of their choice. This year, 40 of Hong Kong’s top bars and restaurants will come together for the 10th iteration of Negroni Week to mix classic and creative variations of Negronis in support of Slow Food. Inspiring a movement towards food and beverage that is good – for them, the people that produce it and the world. The Slow Food Negroni Week Fund will then support projects across the world promoting the preservation of cultural and biological diversity of food and beverage worldwide.
From 12 to 18 September, Hong Kong’s favourite watering holes will be stirring up new and creative recipes for both Negroni-lovers and those new to the classic cocktail. Opening on 12 September with The Negroni Week Opening Party “Closer Than Ever” at the Honly Tonks Tavern. It will be a handcuffed guestshift featuring duo-representatives from participating partners including Argo, DarkSide and The Dispensary. On top of Honky’s team Special Negroni Week menu, each bar duo will create and serve one original Negroni recipe. The prize is a donation to the winner’s local charity of their choice. On the closing night on 18 September, The Daily Tot will be hosting an exciting Negroni Speed Challenge featuring guest bartenders from six participating bars, while post-Negroni Week,Tell Camellia will continue its charitable spirit in support of Women for Women from 21 September onwards (read below for more information).

Mexican-inspired craft cocktail bar Coa, no. 1 on Asia’s 50 Best Bar list for the second year running, is highlighting its Cacao Husk Rosita (HK$120) for this year’s Negroni Week. Featuring a mix of Cacao husk, Campari, Vermouth blend and Tequila Reposado for a complex blend that will surely satisfy classic Negroni lovers.
Argo is serving three styles of Negroni for this year’s Negroni Week. Aside from its original Single Origin Negroni, it will also be featuring recipes from their sister bars Virtù and BKK Social. Its Single Origin Negroni is a mix of Cascara Gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, habanero, and Hulu Gali cacao aged in cocoa pods from Malaysia, serving up a subtly chocolate tipple.
What’s better than sipping on a classic cocktail? Sipping on a classic cocktail with an idyllic view of Victoria Harbour. The city’s beloved Aqua bar and restaurant sits in its new abode on the 17th floor of the H Zentre in Tsim Sha Tsui. It will be serving a Japanese-inspired Negroni, Negroni N5 (HK$120) throughout Negroni Week. Crafted with bittersweet Campari, paired with genmaicha infused tequila, Aperol, red vermouth and mind-blowing umami bitters topped with a green tea surprise.
Over at Rosewood Hong Kong, the city’s timeless monument to rare aged spirits DarkSide calls for cacao lovers with its newly crafted UmeNegroni (HK$170). Mixed with chocolate Campari, plantation dark rum (instead of gin), plum sake, Mancino rosso vermouth, plum bitters and myrrh drops, this is an unusually sweet but delicious iteration of the classic punchy cocktail.
Although Jordan isn’t always a location that springs to mind when on the hunt for the best cocktails, Eaton HK’s Terrible Baby makes the journey worth it. Not to be missed this Negroni Week, the bar will be stirring up a selection of four Negroni riffs, each (HK$100) to satisfy different tastes .
Negroni Clasico, a classic recipe of dry gin, Campari and sweeth vermouth; Terrible Negroni, featuring a splash of Aperol; Tropic-Thunder, a Garibaldi-style for a sweeter alternative that boasts a fruity mix of honey, orange and passion fruit, served in a flute; and our personal favourite, the Four’s Style Negroni, an innovative house cration of Terrible Rum Blend with bitters, spices and shiso leaf all aged in clay pot for three months for a balanced and smooth finish.
Our favourite Carribbean rum-focused bar on Hollywood Road, The Daily Tot substitutes gin for – you guessed it – rum. Highlighting the Popcorn Pandan Negroni ($120), a pandan-infused dark rum, with popcorn-infused vermouth and Campari, the tipple is a blend of sweet, bitter and nutty. In addition, its signature Banana Negroni (HK$130) – a sweet, rum-based negroni that uses Flor de Caña 7yrs, Campari, Sweet Vermouth, Caramelised Banana and Clarified Banana, will also be on offer alongside recipes from its sister bars: Barcode, Tell Camellia and the recently opened house of Vermouth bar and restaurant Bianco & Rosso, mix of B&R Negroni Beefeater Gin, Campri, PunteMes, cedarwood essential oil and lemon zest.
Keep watch! For the closing of Negroni Week on 18 September, The Daily Tot will host six guest bartenders from participating bars, including Terrible Baby, Bella Lee and Tell Camelia in a friendly Negroni Speed Challenge. Come and cheer your favourite bartender as they mix, shake and serve up Negronis as fast as they can.
Famed for their tea-cocktails, Tell Camellia will be offering two technical renditions of a tea-negroni. Spiced Teagroni ($120) is a rum-based twist made with spiced tea while the Sencha & Shiso Negroni ($130) is made with redistilled sencha tea gin, shiso-infused vermouth, and Campari for a zesty, bittersweet riff of the classic Negroni.
But it doesn’t stop there! On 21 from 7pm onwards, Tell Camellia will be hosting Singular Concepts Guest Shift. Presenting a stage for four bartenders from each of Singular Concepts’ venues: Barcode, Daily Tot, Bianco & Rosso and Tell Camellia, each of the bar’s representative will throw their shakers together in support of Women For Women, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that provides practical and moral support to female survivors of war. For each cocktail sold, HK$10 will go to the foundation to help women who are victims of war.
Jimmy Yu of Royal Catering on carving his own compelling path in life
Exquisite canapés and fish and chips do mix for Jimmy Yu. The sociable founder and CEO of Royal Catering is also on a mission to bring new tastes to China – and aid to communities in need through his charity, Smile With Us.
Could you tell us a little about your upbringing and education?
I was born in Hong Kong and moved to UK when I was 12, attending boarding school at Stamford [in Lincolnshire]. I wasn’t always the most well-behaved student and often got into trouble. When I was at university, I got caught in an incident that resulted in my house arrest for 12 months. Because I wasn’t allowed to leave the house, I spent the first few weeks ordering takeaway, but eventually grew tired of it. It was then that I decided to take up cooking.
What are your fondest childhood memories, and how did your family impact the person you are today?
As I mentioned, I wasn’t always on my best behaviour growing up, but I was fortunately blessed to have very supportive parents who encouraged me to explore my curiosities and pursue every venture. After the incident, which my parents were obviously not too happy about, I realised how phenomenal they were to remain supportive and extremely patient with me despite my wrongdoings. I turned over a new leaf and things started to get better from there. I’ve been able to do and experience a lot of different exciting things in my life, as well as explore my own path and start my own business.
Now that I am a father myself, I’m motivated to work harder and give the best I can to what I do. And similar to how my parents were with me, I want to support my daughter and give her the freedom she needs to explore the things she wants to do, while, of course, keeping a close eye on her.
What led you to found Royal Catering? Did you always want to be in the food and beverage industry?
Although I had my fair share of misdemeanours during my school days, academically I did pretty well. Ever since I was in secondary school, I knew I wanted to start my own business. After boarding school, I enrolled at Regent’s Business School [part of Regent’s University London], where I received a full scholarship.
Upon returning to Hong Kong, I spent almost six years working as a Society Editor at an English luxury lifestyle magazine. But having spent half a decade in the industry and witnessing the transition of publications from print media to digital platforms, I felt it was the right time for me to move onto something new.
My entry into the F&B industry was, admittedly, unexpected, but it made the most sense to me. My years as a Society Editor, travelling the world, trying a range of new cuisines and indulging in some of the best canapés each region had to offer, not only allowed me to build a huge network of professional connections and industry friends, but also helped me realise what I loved doing – eating. Towards the end of 2015, I founded Royal Catering Hong Kong, which provides high-end catering services for luxury brands and private clients including Rolex, Ferrari, Lamborghini and D&G.
You’re very involved in the F&B industry. Why is the food business meaningful to you?
I am a big believer in doing what you love and loving what you do. For me, it’s eating. In Chinese there’s a saying that implies that the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the place you live in and the places you travel are the four pillars that make a good life. I felt that being involved in F&B was the best way for me to help give people a taste of the good life. And catering, unlike restaurants, is never limited to set menus and a particular cuisine, so every single client, season and meeting presents a new challenge to develop something different and unique. In my opinion, it’s not just about the food itself but also about presentation and the value of the entire experience for the client and their guests.
You’re also the CEO of China Royal Food Culture. Could you tell us more about this?
With Royal Food Culture, we try to bring the best of Western cuisine to China. Contrary to its culinary landscape in the past, China is becoming more modernised. People are excited to try new things and explore different cultures. The F&B market has been growing rapidly in the last couple of years. For instance, when I franchised Scotts Fish & Chips diner in Chengdu two years ago, I found that the people there were very hip and trendy; they hold onto the local culture while embracing the Western culture.
Although going to McDonald’s and KFC have become commonplace, and dishes like spaghetti are no longer exotic, the dining scene in China is still lacking in terms of Western varieties, which I want to bring into the country. I want to bring the best of the West to the East in areas where people would appreciate it the most.
Do you have any exciting new projects?
I’ve always found China to be an interesting place. I travel to many different places around the world, yet China still impresses me. Following the successful opening of our first – as well as China’s first – British fish and chips diner two years ago, I’ve been returning to the country in the last few months, preparing to open a new location. Though the pandemic put much of my business plan on hold, it is set to open very soon.
Aside from your work, you also co-founded Smile With Us. What led you to start that charity, and what is its mission statement?
My parents instilled in me the values of kindness and helpfulness so I have always felt obligated to give back to the world. Before I started this charity, I would take a week or two off every year to volunteer in a different country. I’ve been to Botswana, Cambodia, the Philippines and several places in China to help underprivileged children and their families.
Although it’s impossible to help everyone in the world, through Smile With Us we try our best to help different communities facing various challenges. In our first year, we helped those with hearing and vision disabilities. The following year we tried to reach out to people suffering from mental illnesses, and during the pandemic, we helped to distribute masks to the needy and sanitise their homes.
Finally, what is the most interesting thing that you’ve ever done?
I’ve done lots of crazy things from sky diving to bungee jumping. I’m big on sports, too, so I enjoy anything from golf and badminton to tennis and snowboarding. Back in the UK, I used to go camping and I backpacked through Spain. That’s something interesting I’d like to do again in the future – to backpack around the world, meet people and learn new cultures first hand.

Euphoric Rise: Zendaya, the youngest Emmy award winner
At just 24, Zendaya already has a Marvel role, an Emmy and a certified platinum song under her belt
At an age where most people are only just starting to navigate their career paths, 24-year-old American actress and singer Zendaya just took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in the smash hit HBO show, Euphoria. She’s the youngest actress in history to win the award, beating out stiff competition from Tinseltown veterans like Laura Linney, Sandra Oh and Jennifer Aniston. She has also been lauded for playing the straight-talking MJ in Marvel’s wildly successful Spider-Man franchise, released two hit albums and recorded a platinum-selling song – Rewrite the Stars, from the soundtrack of the 2017 musical drama The Greatest Showman. The world, it seems, just can’t get enough of Zendaya.
Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman – to give her full name – was born on September 1, 1996, as the only child of teachers Claire Marie Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu, a.k.a. Samuel David Coleman. Painfully shy from the get-go, she was forced to repeat kindergarten in order to socially acclimatise with her schoolmates. At six, she was introduced to acting when she and two of her friends, the only black children at their private school, convinced the principal to allow them to perform a play for Black History Month. “I was Bessie Coleman,” she remembers, “My friends were Harriet Tubman and Madam C.J. Walker. We just felt we needed to raise awareness about the importance of these women.”
From that day on, Zendaya was smitten. Every summer, she would accompany her mom to her second job at the California Shakespeare Theater, acting in several of their productions. She also signed up for dance lessons and joined a dance troupe for three years. Her first taste of stardom, though, came when she landed one of the lead roles of Disney Channel’s Shake It Up in 2010. By the time she graduated high school, the multi-talented teen had starred in two more Disney TV shows, penned an inspirational book for tweens titled Between U and Me, and released a solo album featuring a song, Replay, that went platinum. She also starred in season 16 of Dancing with the Stars at 16 years old – then the youngest-ever contestant on the show – and wound up finishing strong in second place.
Never one to rest on her laurels, Zendaya also found time in her busy schedule to indulge her love of all things sartorial. In 2016, she found her own clothing line, Daya by Zendaya, and also starred as a guest judge on the 15th season of Project Runway. Two years later, she was signed by fashion label Tommy Hilfiger as its global women’s ambassador and collaboratively released several Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya capsule collections.
The crowning achievement of her young life, though, possibly came earlier this year, when she nabbed the coveted Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her leading role as Rue in the HBO hit series Euphoria. Loosely based on the Israeli TV show of the same name, Euphoria delivers a vibrant, almost brutal depiction of contemporary US high school life, burnished with the very real issues of social media, drugs and more. Zendaya was lauded in all corners for her gritty portrayal of the reckless recovering teen drug addict, with The Guardian calling her performance “mesmerising” and “astonishing”, and The New Yorker even dubbing her “the best part” of the series.

Eager to give back, the actress has found a unique way to raise funds and awareness for different causes – by using her birthday as a means to raise funds for worthy initiatives. When she turned 18, she partnered with Convoy of Hope – a philanthropic relief organization with whom she has been connected since 2012 – to raise money to feed over 100 malnourished children in Haiti, the Philippines, and Tanzania. The following year, following a trip to South Africa with UN AIDS, she hosted another fundraising project, this time to help the country’s AIDS orphans. To celebrate turning 20, Zendaya once again teamed up with Convoy of Hope, this time managing to raise US$50,000 for the organization’s Women’s Empowerment Initiative.
Speaking about her passion for charitable and social endeavors, she says, “I don’t just sing, dance, and act because I love it,” she says. “You have to have a purpose, and mine is to connect with the world, to get across messages that are important. I’d much rather be known for leaving a little stamp of positivity on one person’s life than for the last project that I did.”

She still does, however, have multiple projects looming on the horizon, with her next high-profile appearance set to be in the upcoming remake of Frank Herbert’s cult science-fiction novel Dune (2021) alongside co-star Timothée Chalamet. She has also reunited with Euphoria director Sam Levinson in the upcoming drama Malcolm & Marie, a production that was shot in secret during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Perhaps her most anticipated silver screen return, though, is the reprisal of her beloved role as MJ in the as-yet untitled third sequel of the Spider-Man franchise, set for release in 2021. After that, the path seems less clear, though given Zendaya’s smart choices – both onscreen and in the charity sphere – chances are her star can only continue to rise.

The OneSky Hong Kong Gala celebrates an evening of bright stars
Last Friday, the OneSky Hong Kong Gala took place inside the JW Marriot Hong Kong, where guests partook in a night of celebration, unrestricted funding and charity. Initially founded in 1998 as “Half the Sky”, the now re-named OneSky is an NGO organisation that designs and implements affordable, replicable model programmes to help communities and caregivers unlock the vast hidden potential of the world’s vulnerable young children in Hong Kong, China, Vietnam and Mongolia.
Guests of the gala celebrated one truly incredible achievement – the upcoming opening of the PC Lee OneSky Global Centre for Early Childhood Development in Sham Shui Po. The centre will take the NGO’s mission to help “hidden children” to new heights by offering the local community a place for early learning childhood development, while also acting as a local community drop-in centre. Working closely with the government and key stakeholders, the centre will train caregivers, thus reaching thousands more children right here in Hong Kong, as well as across all OneSky programs.
Thanking attendees for their continued generosity and support, CEO and Founder Jenny Bowen addressed the gala crowd with gratitude, expounding that their help has allowed OneSky to touch the lives of children in not only in Hong Kong, but in China, Vietnam and Mongolia. Other highlights of the OneSky Hong Kong Gala included live and silent auctions, where a considerable sum was raised thanks to the generous supporters and prize sponsors that evening.

The One 2019 Gala Dinner honours local and international humanitarians
On Wednesday, 8 May, the Holiday Inn Golden Mile hotel‘s ballroom was transformed into a space for celebration for the eighth edition of The One 2019 Gala Dinner and was attended by nearly 400 of the city’s celebrities, socialites and industry leaders. The evening saw nearly HK$2 million in prize money awarded to winners and runner-ups.
Founded by Hong Kong entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. David Harilela, The One annually acknowledges the ultimate unsung heroes from the 852 and beyond, awarding one with a grand cash prize of HK$200,000, and the two runner-ups with HK$80,000. The prize money is then used to bolster the humanitarian’s efforts and expand on the existing service projects they lead.
Taking home the grand-prize and honour as The One this year was Maria Law, a single mother to an intellectually disabled daughter. Ms. Law operates the Holy Café in Cheung Shan Wan, where she employs her daughter as well as other individuals with intellectual disabilities, giving them the chance to be employed and trained in restaurant service. The runner-ups were Chow Shu Tak, a street hawker in Jordan who provides care to the homeless and intellectually-disabled, and Nip Yeung Sing, a former businessman, who has developed programmes for Hong Kong’s elderly including funeral services and food distribution.
UNICEF HK unveils charity art exhibition inspired by the next generation
At the end of October, charitable organisation UNICEF HK unveiled a special exhibition entitled The Illumination of Love and Philanthropy at ifc mall in Central. The two-week event was targeted at highlighting the importance and value of giving unconditional love to the children of the world.
For the special occasion, two renowned contemporary Chinese artists – Ren Zhen Yu and Zou Cao – created a series of distinctive portrait paintings that paid tribute to the contributions and philanthropy of such noted celebrity figures as Mother Teresa, actress Audrey Hepburn, Singapore ex-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and the legendary Bruce Lee.
In keeping with the charitable drive of the exhibition, the public were invited to participate in the Pay It Forward campaign onsite and contribute donations towards various UNICEF HK programmes worldwide. In return, they received an electronic postcard featuring one of the displayed artworks as a keep-sake of the event.
Taking the spirit of generosity one step further, Art Futures Group, the region’s dedicated Chinese contemporary art specialist and creative partner of UNICEF HK for The Illumination of Love and Philanthropy, further donated HK$5 per postcard created.

French artist Invader attacks Harbour City with street art for a good cause

Iconic French street artist Invader has hit Hong Kong with a new series of 32 impressive artworks. He recently invaded Harbour City installing 18 of his art pieces on prominent locations around the mall. His signature piece Space Invader is one of the most eye-catching installations. Other pieces like Anchor, Mermaid and Emojis match the theme of Harbour City.
What makes this collaboration so unique is that this is the first time that the iconoclastic artist is pairing up with a shopping mall for a charity fundraiser. For the occasion, he has designed a limited-edition umbrella printed with the same mosaic Anchor pattern that is displayed at the Ocean Terminal Rooftop Carpark.

It’s the time for sharing and spreading joy. While we are busy buying gifts for our loved ones, what about our furry friends who have to spend time in adoption centres? To help care for abandoned dogs this Christmas, Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) and Nordic lifestyle boutique squarestreet have come up with a unique partnership to raise funds for saving and re-homing dogs across Hong Kong.
The squarestreet team has painstakingly built and hand-painted a miniature winter village (120cm x 80cm) called Dogtown, on display at their shop (G/F, 15 Square Street, Sheung Wan) till 15 January 2018.
Guests can view the installation and buy dog or human figurines at only HKD50 each to populate the mostly deserted Dogtown. Donors can also name their purchased dog or human characters, adding their own personal touch to Dogtown’s winter story.
100% of the proceeds will go to HKDR to help in its ongoing endeavour to unite canine friends with their happily-ever-after homes.
