Call of Ruby: Dubbed “The King of Coloured Stones”, rubies have been a long-time favourite of royalties and warriors alike.

As a symbol of their eminent social rank, royalty from several cultures all over the world likewise proudly acquired and wore rubies. Natural ruby gemstones are extremely rare and expensive, making them a sign of opulence and dominance. As rubies have long been revered as a stone of kings, monarchs and other members of the aristocracy in Europe and Asia have adorned themselves with ornate ruby crowns. The birthstone for July, known for its associations with knowledge and beauty, can range in colour from a deep, almost purple red to a pinkish red that some might argue is edging closer to being a pink sapphire. There are no wrong choices when it comes to selecting stunning ruby jewellery for yourself or your significant other, even though the colour may have an impact on the value. In the end, the most appropriate ruby for you is the one you are most drawn to.

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

Hot on the heels of our pick of the best dressed ladies at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, we did not forget about the best dressed men at the event. Be it a classic black and white tuxedo or a custom-made outfit, the men of Hollywood sure know how to make a fashionable statement on the red carpet. Below, we review the best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.

Ansel Elgort

Like Ansel Elgort’s impromptu singing, when he presented the award for Best Original Song – Motion Picture, his outfit also caught our attention at the Golden Globes. For the event, the Baby Driver actor ditched the usual black and white colour scheme and went for a dark blue velvet suit with a pale blue evening shirt by the American fashion brand Tom Ford, pairing it with navy William Tassel loafers. Moreover, the Tiffany Enchant® butterfly brooch made of diamonds and sapphires elevated his look further.

Nick Jonas

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

When celebrity power couple Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra went on stage to present the Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy award, their collective ensembles were both minimalistic and on point. The Jonas Brother opted for a black silk dinner suit by the Italian fashion maison Prada and completed it with a Saffiano necklace in place of a regular tie. He accessorised his look with an Octo watch decorated with diamonds and a ring made of sapphire and tanzanite – both designed by the high-end jewellery brand BVLGARI.

Nicholas Braun

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

‘Less is more’ is the right way to describe Nicholas Braun – the actor of Succession, the show which won the Best Television series award – on the red carpet. Donning a navy two-buttoned tuxedo along with a black satin bow tie by the fashion house Prada, his sartorial style was appealingly clean-cut. Moreover, he is another celebrity who made it to our list of best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards for not choosing to wear the old school black tuxedo. Besides, the toned down colour contrast of his outfit was one of our favourite things about his look.

Taron Egerton

Best dressed men at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

While we may have stressed on choosing a colour other than black, we still can’t deny that a perfectly tailored black and white suit is more classy and timeless. Similar to other famous celebrities like Brad Pitt and Leonardo Caprio, the winner of the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy award, Taron Egerton, also went for this classic look. Egerton, who won the award for his amazing acting in the film Rocketman, finished his look with a Montblanc Star Legacy Full Calendar watch.

Saving the best for the last, we have the Best Performance by an Actor – Television Series nominee Billy Porter. Since the time he went viral for wearing a dress to the 2019 Oscars, we’re always on the lookout to see what he wears on the red carpet next. This time too, he became one of the most stylish men at the event with his all-white custom made Alex Vinash suit that he paired with white Jimmy Choo boots. According to an Instagram post made by the Pose actor, the theme of his look was “BLAQUE SWAN” and his colour of choice symbolised “peace, hope, and new beginnings.” He completed his look with accessories from the American jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. – a Tiffany diamond necklace, a Tiffany Dragonfly Brooch and Tiffany T rings. The fashionista elevated his look further with a Ludlow clutch by the New York based designer brand Emm Kuo.

Best Dressed Ladies at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

When it comes to any award show, most of us never fail to take notice of the stunning looks worn on the red carpet. Thereby, as much as we were interested in seeing which deserving actor won which award, we also kept an eye for the best dressed ladies at the recent 2020 Golden Globe Awards show. Below are the ladies of Hollywood who caught our attention with their sense of style ‒ all, of course, in the best possible way.

Ana de Armas

2020 Golden Globe Awards

Ana de Armas, who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy award shined on the red carpet with her sparkling dark blue Ralph & Russo gown. The Knives Out heroine elevated the look further with her Tiffany & Co. jewellery. An elegant necklace made of 19 pear-shaped sapphires with princess-cut diamonds between each sapphire stone that matched the colour of her dress was paired with pear-shaped diamond earrings and tanzanite ring. Her accessories complemented her strapless dress so well that our only dilemma was in deciding if she stood out or her ensemble did.

Charlize Theron

2020 Golden Globe Awards

Another Hollywood lady who finished her red carpet look with ornaments by the American high-end jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. was Charlize Theron, who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Designed to mimic a grosgrain ribbon, the Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Book Collection necklace worn by the lead actor of Bombshell featured baguette sapphires and diamonds that was centered by an emerald gemstone that was the true highlight of the piece. Moreover, her bold and minimalistic look with Dior’s black and green Haute Couture dress was equally mesmerising. Her entire look was timeless.

Cynthia Erivo

2020 Golden Globe Awards

While this year’s nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Cynthia Erivo ’s Thom Browne tuxedo dress was remarkable, it was her BVLGARI necklace– valued up to US$3 million – that made jaws drop. With a 40-carat cabochon sapphire pendant attached to a necklace made of diamonds and sapphires, the BVLGARI high jewellery accentuated her look perfectly. She paired the necklace with the luxury brand’s earrings and rings that were made of sapphires and diamonds too. The Harriet star’s song, Stand Up, was also nominated for Best Original Song – Motion Picture. Put together, her vogue on the award this award show was on the point.

Jennifer Lopez

Often appreciated for her fashion sense, Hustlers actor Jennifer Lopez obviously made it to our list of best dressed ladies for good reason. Draped in a tri-colour Valentino Haute Couture dress, she completed her red carpet look with a Harry Winston jewellery set, starring an 18K gold and platinum necklace lined with Colombian emeralds and diamonds. The nominee for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture matched it with a cushion-cut Colombian emerald and diamond earrings.  In conclusion, J Lo’s entire outfit was yet another testimony to her long-standing sense of fashion.

Scarlett Johansson

2020 Golden Globe Awards

The iconic Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson looked marvellous as ever with her crimson Vera Wang silk dress. Johansson, who was nominated for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama award for her starring role in Marriage Story, accentuated her red carpet look with a BVLGARI diamond necklace,  a heritage bracelet and stud earrings. With striking white diamonds that went well with her red gown, her red carpet look was simple yet sophisticated. Thus, making it as one of Gafencu’s favourite red carpet look at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.

Opulent and Dazzling: Eastern-inspired jewellery collections

Ruby and jadeite brooches…dazzling diamond phoenixes… dangling dancing lions… These exotic motifs offer a tantalising glimpse of the Eastern-inspired motifs currently beguiling many haute joaillerie labels. In a fortunately festive twist, ruby reds and emerald greens – long regarded as the most auspicious colours in Chinese cultural circles – feature prominently in these collections. Although visually varied, each item is distinguished by a touch of the ornately Oriental and a clear passion for sheer opulence. Hong Kong-based Qeelin has released a set of earrings fit for the hostess of even the most affluent of New Year celebrations. Featuring a striking dancing lion motif, these 18-carat rose gold earrings are available in both a dangle and stud style, with diamonds and onyx beautifully complementing this most precious of metals.

While ostensibly taking its inspiration from the biblical tale of Noah and his ark, Van Cleef & Arpels’ new collection of gem-encrusted animal brooches leaves enough open to interpretation to intrigue any true Sinophile. Rich in more local folklore association, the Phoenix brooch – with its stunning white gold, diamonds, onyx, mother-of-pearl and ruby inlaid clip – will have a particular appeal to many Chinese purchasers.

Similarly steeped in Sino-symbolism is Cartier’s seal watch-brooch, with its emblematic image of a Buddhist lion and stunning use of many of the gemstones that characterise traditional Asian jewellery. These most notably include jadeite and rubies, but not without a generous sprinkling of onyx, enamel, gold and diamonds. Concealed neatly within a 19th-century Chinese jade seal, the piece forms part of the Jade – From Emperors to Art Déco collection.

Rounding out the collection with a more understated hymn of praise to the wonders of the East is the Ballon Bleu de Cartier Orchids motif watch. The centerpiece of the watch is a beguiling recreation of three rare orchids, flowers native to Asia and widely regarded as symbols of perfection and nobility. Given the timepiece’s 18-carat yellow gold, mother-of-pearl and diamond housing, the symbolism couldn’t be more apt.

Bulgari has Christmas gift ideas wrapped up

Looking for the perfect gift for a lucky man or woman in your life? Bulgari has plenty of Christmas gift ideas.

For example, ladies can choose from a Serpenti Forever flap cover bag in silver calf leather, a Serpenti pink gold band ring with rubellite eyes and pavé-set diamonds head or Serpenti pink gold earrings with rubellite eyes and pavé-set diamonds head.

Men, fear not, you have not been left out. Bulgari has a number of watches, such as the Octo Ultranero Velocissimo in 18k pink gold with a steel case and black diamond like carbon coating and integrated rubber strap.

At the winding up of the year, there’s no present like the time

Bulgari 2
Time and tide wait for no man,” according to Geoffrey Chaucer, that renowned 12 century poet and wit, and neither does Christmas, bringing with it the perennial challenge of choosing quite the perfect present for your loved ones and in-laws. Luckily for chronophiles and lovers of haute horology everywhere, ‘tis also the season that heralds the advent of a veritable sledful of new releases from the world’s most respected luxury watchmakers.

While this certainly provides no shortage of choice, it can also prove somewhat daunting prospect, with eager givers obliged to scour a myriad of look books and slow-loading websites in order to identify just the perfect timepiece. Keen make your life a little easier over the festive period, we’ve singled out a few of the more outstanding examples of haute horology, all conveniently hitting the shelves just in time for you to festively gift-wrap them for a life partner or loved one.

Just as two luxurious timepieces are never quite the same, neither are those aficionados who truly covet them. Where one chronograph connoisseur might value aesthetics above all else, another heart may be set aflutter by functionality and precision. For those looking to play it safe, Chopard’s Imperiale Joaillerie watch pretty much covers all the requisite bases.

Meticulously crafted over 1,012 arduous watchmaking hours by keen artisans of the highest order, this is a lavishly dazzling timepiece and one quite unlike any other. Undeniably captivating, the watch is set with 581 sapphires – totalling 47.98 carats – that run the gamut from the subtler chromatic shades right through to a universe of blues, reds and yellows. This is a timepiece that needs to be seen at first hand to be truly appreciated. A genuine work of art, this 18 carat rose gold watch comes set with baguette-cut sapphires, creating a pleasingly chromatic aberration across the dial.

Every bit as impressive is the Chopard 01.03-C calibre that powers the Imperiale Joaillerie. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it also boasts a 60-hour power reserve. Certainly not the choice for those apt to dodge the social spotlight, this is the perfect watch for those ladies who like to make an instant impression and who will resonate with its display of colour and glamour.

On the more demure end of the aesthetic scale comes watch that was the smallest circular timepiece available when it made its 1956 debut. The Blancpain Ladybird was a watch that revolutionised feminine timepieces 60 years ago. Since then, it has been subject to variety updates, as the marque sought to maintain its modernity and elegance, while never compromising its bold, ageless aesthetic.

The latest Ladybird is powered by the new automatic calibre 6150, and – at just 15.7 mm – it remains one of the smallest such watches the world has ever seen. Set with 32 diamonds atop its bezel, with eight diamonds ringing its dial and all fetchingly framed in white gold, this newest incarnation is as elegant as it is pioneering. Finished with a Louisiana alligator strap and a clear caseback – allowing a view of the intriguing inner workings of the winding rotor – the Ladybird remains a truly classic timepiece.

Time 2

Another classic to have undergone something of a modern makeover is the Tank Solo. Unmistakeably Cartier, this elegant timepiece features the marque’s iconic square watch face, all adorned with the company’s instantly recognisable Roman numeral hour indicators. Distinguished yet modest, the Tank Solo is available in a more feminine 31mm edition or in a resolutely 40.85mm edition, with both encased in stainless steel and displaying a silvered opaline dial, as well as the brand’s unique sword-shaped blue steel hands.

Although the Tank Solo is the last word in simplicity and elegance, an added frisson of customisability comes in its choice of interchangeable straps, with options ranging from the earthier pantone shades to bright zesty hues. These ensuring that the wearer can express a flash of individuality, while also ensuring that your watchband never clashes with your evening’s overall ensemble.

Another truly iconic timepiece – and one that has proved a benchmark in the luxury watch sector ever since its 1979 debut – is the Piaget Polo S. As its name more than suggests, this particular watch takes its styling from the equestrian pastime so beloved by the affluently sporty, with its opulent aesthetic a clear nod to the game that inspired it.

Time 2

A playful take on geometric patterns, the Polo S houses a cushion-shaped dial within a round stainless steel case, tastefully completed with the addition of a sapphire case back. Discernible through the rear sapphire mounting is Piaget’s 1110P or 1160P automatic movement (depending on the model specified). All sized at 42mm, the Polo S is available in five variants, coming in a choice of appliqués with the option of several different chronographic functions. All of the editions, however, come with a steel bracelet with alternating polished and satin links, a fine finish to its ruggedly elegant look.

Our final offering in this festive round up of fine watches comes courtesy of a brand long synonymous with true horological beauty. From Itay’s Maison Bulgari comes the Octo Ultranero range of timepieces, a range that exudes an air of almost arcane sophistication, while sacrificing nothing in the way of functionality.

With a striking and powerful black overall motif, these watches are powered by the brand’s proprietary Solotempo BVL 193 movement, vibrating at a frequency of 28,800 per hour and with power reserve of more than 50 hours. In fetching contrast to the black dial and black rubber strap is piece’s rose gold detailing – most notably, its hour markers and hands – that adds a touch of refinement to the wilfully bleak functionality of this highly practical watch. With four different models to choose from, these are timepieces that look every bit as good at a black tie event as they do on the deck of your personal yacht. All in all, the perfect marriage of form and function and, of course, that unmistakeable air of Bulgari sophistication.
